One picture showed a blanked-out serial number. That could be to prevent someone from tracking down the source of the camera - who sold the camera to a gray-market importer. Canon would probably want to know if one of their authorized dealers was doing this.

The faked serial number in the other picture could be to allow warranty coverage on a product that would not be eligible with its actual serial number. But I suspect it was actually done for the same reason as above - to hide where it came from from Canon.
