All of the images I see on Explore have double digit favorites which is something none of my images have.

Awesome Annie!

Well, you do have to be relatively active on Flickr - follow people whose photos you like and 'like' some photos. After that, who knows?

Not necessarily. I have one photo that's still in Explore (Top 500 interestingness) for the day it was uploaded, and it only has 13 total favs on it. I've also had a photo make it in to Explore with only 3 favorites, though it has subsequently dropped out of the top 500.

You need to follow people, have people follow you, share your photos in groups (but not too many!), and be wordy in your title, description and tags. If you look through Explore on any given day, you'll see that taking excellent pictures isn't necessarily a requirement, though it sure doesn't hurt.

From my web data mining (and my own experience), to get to Explore all it takes is to get ~5 faves, a few comments, and ~50 views in the first 12 hours from uploading your photo to Flickr. This assuming that your photo joined only one - two groups (make sure that it is not a group which officially forces people to fave/comment other photos in the pool - Explore bans them). Choose a very active and fairly small (a few thousand members at most) group, submit a worthy photo, and you might get a surprise.

I always heard the 'opinion' that sharing to groups lessened your chances.

Then got one explored after it had been shared with at least 7 groups. Go figure.

Congratulations, Annie!

DGStinner, I can give you a simple solution to your problem. Follow plenty of people (lets say at least one thousand), and I can bet your images will get easily lots of comments, faves and views. In my opinion, as long as an algorithm decides if your image will be explored or not, it doesn't make you a better photographer.

Are you suggesting I follow that many people in the assumption ~1% will follow back, view and fave some of my images?

Here are 2 of my latest that have been explored. Would be great to have some new followers, I'll usually follow straight back.

Exactly.

If you decide to make such an experiment, let us know later about results.

Some great images here. I've long given up on being "Explored".

With the impending closure of the POTN Forum, please consider joining the POTN "Alumni" Facebook group (external link) as a way of maintaining communication with our members, continuing to share/discuss your work, and overall to keep the POTN spirit alive.
