Awesome thread that brings back so many memories. I was born in 1945 and grew up in Kansas City. So many things that were there when I was growing up that are still there. So many memories from such great photos. Makes me want to go back for a visit.
Thanks for the memories!

My first thought was how did I miss "seeing" so much. You all have managed to capture so much of the essence of Kansas City, then and now.
The Plaza was something that my parents made sure that my brother and I enjoyed every Christmas through our early, childhood years. There was one store in particular that had a window straight out of "Christmas Story". You could see all of the toys and there were model trains running, and I swear I can see a Daisy Red Rider BB-gun (in my minds eye anyway). I am so happy that the Plaza is still there to enjoy.
During the sixties or early seventies, after a torrential downpour, Brush Creek flooded the Plaza area and caused quite the mess. I missed it as I was in the service overseas but my Father sent me newspaper clippings.
I was told that the Plaza had a moroccan sister city but don't know if that is true or not.

Keep up the good work folks, the photos are beautiful!

Doug, the department store window you saw may have been Harzfeld's (now defunct) or Halls. And I remember the Plaza flood of 1977 well. My place of business was (and still is) right on Brush Creek, which runs through the Plaza and is where the flooding occurred. Fortunately, our building sits on a little rise, so we dodged a major bullet that night; the water reached right up to the front steps. Sadly, a few people died only about 100 feet from our building where the creek passed through an underground culvert.
Our sister city is Seville, Spain, which has a strong Moorish architectural influence. The Plaza is still the prettiest area in Kansas City IMO. Visitors welcome!

This is a picture of me, my brother and Father after a day of fishing on my Grandparents farm near Kingston, MO. I'm the short one on the right standing near what my friends claim might be dinosaur scat but in reality is cow manure. I do remember this day as I recall falling in the lake.
Sadly, my parents and brother are long gone.

I've seen a few pictures showing the Kansas City Power & Light building where my Father started out as an elevator operator and advanced up to be a surveyor. My Mom, brother and I would sometimes meet him after his work and we would walk down the street to the Forum cafeteria for supper.
One year for Christmas, my Father took my brother and me downtown to Gateway Sporting Goods and bought us a H&R 20 gauge shotgun to share. After the purchase, the three of us, with the gun, boarded a city bus to go home. Can you imagine someone getting on a city bus with a shotgun these days! Certainly different times.
(Correction: It may have been on one of the newer electric street cars before they changed over to diesel buses.)
