^beautiful herons. Great Blues? I wish I knew birds better, God knows I should as much as I shoot them (me the non-birder ha!)
Seems I was posting at Dyxum or FM about how the A7x series + 70-400 is a wonderful wildlife rig.

The first one is a little blue and the second is a tricolor.

I've been impressed with the a7 for wildlife. I really like the ability to pull up the shadows. My last wildlife camera was a Canon 7D and it wasn't even close when it comes to image quality. I did really like the 7D ergonomics and the better focus tracking etc. How do you like the a77? I thought about picking one up since I really like the 70-400 lens and this would allow me to use the lens on my a7 in low light conditions as needed.

OK we're back home and settling/unpacking from our cycle camping trip-unseasonably warm weather got us out in the beloved woods where we only had a low of
39F=freaky warm for us.
Before leaving I downloaded DXO Optics (10 maybe) for the sole reason that on FM the DXO Prime is lauded for Sony noise reduction. I needed another noise reducer like another hole in the head but why not do the trail.
So the she-Boss Poof is sitting here on the Presidential and I decide to test. Really my first instance of pushing the Rii to anything big, seriously big. Yeah it had grain OOC and basically nothing anyone would use-but DXO Prime did a good job, it is slow and takes lots of computer power to run (so I read). Better than NIK, Imagenomic (my preferred for Astro), Topaz, or the native n.r. in LRc? I don't know. I'll keep playing with it over time. So here is Poof at 51,200

Congrats on the Batis lens, Gene!

Applied a vintage effect on this one

Thanks Zethar.
I forgot to mention I was really exploring ISO studies for the a77ii.
It needs help far more than the A7Rii.
The pundits are saying that with DXO prime I should be able to shoot
with confidence via the a77ii at 6400....and if pigs could fly!
But in my environment 6400 would really help and the a77ii is a daily
hauler (hauler: camera in the car just in case I see a hawk).

Speaking of hawks. Here is a pic of Poof preparing our GHO for hawks.
Hawks and GHOs hate each other. A red-tailed hawk will attack a GHO
so this is one method we've come up with to 'attract' hawks to us sitting
in our blinds wearing Ghille suits.
Poof is adding feathers to make it more lifelike. This model has a bobble
head that adds to the realism.

This shot SOOC, no NR, only shadows brought up a bit. ISO 12,800.
OH, forgot, shot in jpg and crop mode (I never can remember to turn off crop)
Again, no sharpening, no party tricks at all except resizing for fit here at POTN

Thanks David! I should have mentioned that scene is from the bar at a new hotel in town. Very cool design and vintage touches everywhere.

Check out this old engine they left in place in the grand lobby. This shot and the last few were all hand held.

The blue light on the left is some sort of reflection from the windows.

I really like the Prime noise reduction in DXO Optics Pro as well...it's like getting an extra stop of ISO out of your camera, which is tremendous.

Speaking of raw converters, I just installed Capture One Pro 9. Very impressed.

Yesterday I was doing extensive comparison studies between 5DS R and a7R II using all my lenses in LR. Two amazing cameras btw. Anyway, I was very happy with the performance of all my Canon-mount lenses on the a7R II. But the overall images just looked flat and not as dimensional with the a7R II compared to the 5DS R images. So, it finally really sank in: Adobe just does not handle Sony raw files as well. So, today I tried out the latest C1 and love . One surprise was being able manually select lens profiles just like in LR. Maybe it's been there all along, but Just didn't notice till today.

And just so you know my background, I've been trying to use C1 since version 6, so this isn't my first look at it. I've tried and tried and tried and tried to like C1, but kept going back to LR. Stuff like the manually applying lens profiles kept me sticking with LR. No more excuses. The IQ difference is ridiculous so this time I am making a more concerted effort to make C1 my primary raw converter going forward. We'll see. :)

I can get my A7 to get pretty clean 12,800 but not 25,600... Yet. i say yet because I've still yet to shoot raw on it. One of these days I'll get my software sorted out. The jpegs are incredible though so I'm not in a rush.

Hey everyone. I shared two pictures last sunday of my first serious shootout with my new A7RII. When I edited those files, i found the get strange circular flares when pushing shadows excessively. I thought that it is just flare because i was using an UWA lens and the sun was almost everytime just out of the frame.

However, i came across a post in facebook of someone having the same circular artifacts when he pushed the files. Well, its an A6000, but then someone mentioned a link to others with A7RII having the same issues. When i get home i need to show to you how it looked for my shots! One time at the very edge of my image i noticed something like a weird rainbow flare.

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3882265 (external link)

While writing this i found an interesting comment:

I recall seeing something like that when I first got my A7R, in my case it was caused by lens compensation -> vignetting correction being enabled which appeared to get baked into the raw.

Now i think this might be the problem. The rainbow at the edge of the file (which also appeared to be the darkest corner) may well be introduced due to vignetting correction...

Ill have to test this this evening. Can anyone in the meantime tell me if you have these problems too?
