I have a Pentax K to EOS M(M2,M3) adapter if anyone needs one, upgraded to the A7 so I'm not using it anymore.

I brought my EOS M to a Christmas party for some casual shots. I liked being a little more inconspicuous over my usual DSLR combo. All with the 22mm pancake. I'm in one of these, I will let you guess which one, haha.

Are there any simple remotes that work with the EOS M or do you need to go thru the hassle of ML, wired connections and all that to shoot with a remote?

BTW, Wise, I purchased a set of the wireless remote/receiver to use on my 5Dc that you used before. Thanks for sharing your setups.

Very best,

Whoa! Please explain this setup? I am particularly interested in (what looks like) the remote trigger. Please describe/explain!

All remotes work the with the EOS-M if you use tragic lantern (not magic lantern; it's an older build). I use the same trigger I use with my 5D, and other cameras, with the EOS-M. But it does require the use of tragic lantern as the EOS-M does not have a native input for remote shutter releases that isn't infrared. I wanted radio so that I didn't need LOS. So I installed tragic lantern. Magic lantern is the latest versions and it lacks the audio-input port being used as a shutter remote. Only the older builds when it was tragic lantern has this. Mine has been totally stable. No problems. I just don't turn on any features at all except the audio port ability, and so nothing else, and it's totally fine.

Tragic Lantern build May 09, 2014 (V31.337). Yes, that's the real version lol. You can get it off their old website, it's still up and still serves their old builds. But this build specifically is the one I researched up that has the working audio-port input use for remote shutters that is stable on the EOS-M. Very specific version. I simply installed it per their instructions and do not use any features of it, except the audio port shutter input. And you have to enable it each time you turn it on so it's not constant. I've been using it for almost a year now, no issues. Wonderful being able to use the M remotely! With this, you can use any normal wireless shutter system that normally would work with any EOS.

First of all, again, you must use tragic lantern to be able to use a radio based wired dongle with a remote radio based wireless remote for remote shutter control with the EOS-M. Natively, it lacks this. This is why the new M3 is so cool to me, it has WiFi, and so you can just use your phone and do this. But I use one remote shutter on all my cameras and will link it below. I just wanted to make it very clear that the only way to use the EOS-M remotely is to use a hack, tragic lantern, not even magic lantern, but tragic lantern and I posted the specific stable build I use above so that you can grab it if you want to try it (other versions don't work it seems; and this feature is not even available in the magic lantern builds for EOS-M!).

Here's the remote trigger I use: (LINK) (external link). It's a generic one. Pixel Oppilas. It has a wired dongle that you put into your camera's remote trigger port and it is powered on via a battery. It has a cold shoe mount so you can put it on your camera's hotshoe or into the back of a transceiver (like I did) to hold it. Nice! This thing works really well, it's radio, and it works from very far away. The remote is also on battery and totally wireless. The options allow for single shot, continuous, bulb (hold it as long as you want) and timer. Depending on which trigger version you buy, it may come with a different cable. The 1D, 5D, 7D, etc, series use the 3 prong Canon port. So it will come with a 2.5mm (male) to 3 prong male Canon port. The other ones will come with a standard 2.5mm to 2.5mm cable. I got that one. It doesn't matter though since you can buy the cables for cheap anyways and the cables on this system are totally replaceable. Nothing is hard wired.

I use this with all my EOS cameras. It works on my 1D's, my 5D, all my APS-C's and my EOS-M no problem.

The system uses the standard 2.5mm TRS termination. EOS cameras typically use 2.5mm input, or the 3 pronged port found on the higher level EOS's (my 1D, 5D, 7D, etc, all use the 3 prong port; but all my other APS-C's use a 2.5mm TRS port). The EOS-M doesn't have one. It just has a 3.5mm port for audio input, normally used for a microphone. Tragic lantern turns that port into a trigger. So you simply use an adapter to take 2.5mm TRS to 3.5mm TRS, and that's that. No fancy stuff. Cheap too. You don't have to use an adapter though. You can also just get a cheap $4 cable that is 2.5mm to 3.5mm directly. No fuss no muss!

2.5mm (male) to 3.5mm (male) for exact use no matter what version trigger you buy above, for use with the EOS-M's audio port. This works fine! (LINK) (external link) for $4.

So as you can see here, I have the Yongnuo RF603c transceiver in my hotshoe for triggering my flash off camera on the EOS-M. I then have the Oppilas remote trigger dongle on that cold shoe of my lighting trigger. I then use the cable from the trigger to the EOS-M's audio input port:

IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/BEyACZ (external link) a495 (external link) by Martin Wise (external link), on Flickr

And here's the remote that triggers the shutter via radio. Just press it and boom, it fires. The flash is in the cabin off camera as that's how I exposed myself in my truck cabin while driving. No cables here. If you see a cable it's just there because I had a pile of stuff.
