Looking to pick up a new Canon lens, and having read around there seems to be some consensus about post-christmas being a good period to buy.

Can anyone give me an idea of how long after usually the sales take place? Is it Canon or some authorized retailers that do the sales?

thank you

Historically, the best time to buy has been around Black Friday, or in the weeks between Black Friday and Christmas in early December.

In previous years, there have not been any discounts post-Christmas. Typically the Canon rebate will expire in early January, and prices go back up.

That being said, even if dealers are willing to discount, you're unlikely to see the discounted price at authorized retailers as they are not permitted to advertise low prices. What you may see are "free items" added (such as printers, accessories, or rewards.)

ok, thanks for the feedback.

I was looking at the historic prices of a lens I am interested in, and in previous years, it did show it going lower during December and January, while in other years price decreased from January to February.

As for the Canon rebate, the lens I am looking at doesn't seem to be included in any of their current rebates, so hopefully the price won't go up!

What lens are you looking for? If you poke around camelcamelcamel (external link) and look at the historic price trends, there is almost no correlation at all. For instance, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II hit it's low in August and is back at the low today but the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L was in Dec 2012 and has not gotten that low again. CPW (external link) is a good tool as well.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.
