I like this, but I personally would move the ball closer to the tree to fill the ball with just the tree. Seeing so much of the room kinda kills the vibe for me.

Awesome. Did the crystal ball invert the image upside down, making you have to rotate the image inside it to be right side up? To Photoshop out the stand did you just clone, or take a second frame without the ball and then paint in that layer. The latter is how I would approach the shot, having the shot composed on a tripod, get the frames with the ball, remove it and capture frames without it.

All in all that's a great shot and I may steal the idea for our tree one year. So cool!

Yes the image in the ball was inverted. Since the background is abstract, I just flipped it. I could have rotated just the interior image if the back ground had been more interesting. I hadn't thought about it in advance, so I was surprised that the ball had to be very close to the camera (short lens). Be sure to wipe the ball or you will get lots of fingerprints.

Ah, yup, now that you say that, I can see that you just inverted the whole image. There is a tiny part on the lower right where the lights and tree and angle inwards like they would at the top of the tree. But without being told that I never noticed and I was looking at these details. It's very close filling the entire frame, but just a touch of the corner. That is much easier and made a great photograph.

Thank you for sharing the dirty secrets of this image, and the tips on shooting my own.
