I just ran the update and tested my Fotodiox adapter with my Canon 85mm f/1.8. I was excited to have this work, as I lucked out with a really nice copy of this 85mm.

Unfortunately, I'm seeing some weird results...

With face detect on, AF is pretty quick and very accurate. I'd say the AF speed is within 90% of my 6D. It even focuses on the near eye, when my subject is turned slightly to the side. This part is really awesome.

However, on any other object (without a face), the AF appears to get close, but then hunts back and forth very fast, and never gets an AF lock.

I've tried it with all the AF areas: wide, center and flexible-spot. And on AF-S and AF-C. Results are the same.

Anyone else updated the firmware and tested their EF lenses?

I should add that I'm very happy that face detect works at all, since portraits are the only reason I own this 85mm :)

Worked well with my metabones iv. Used with 70-200 II , 24-70 II, 135 L (hunt) and sigma art 35 was ok as well.

Thanks Peter,

I'm really interested in hearing more about how the 135L is working, as I want to pick up a copy.

Can you please elaborate? Is it doing the slow, full rack, contrast-detect hunt, or faster phase-detect hunt?

I can't get my Canon 85 f1.8 to lock focus at all with phase detection with a Commlite. Is there something I am doing wrong?

Did you change the manual distance to 85mm? I heard the canon 85mm has trouble with the new update.

85 1.8 only works with metabones on a7ii/a7rii. I tried it on viltrox and it would never lock focus.

You guys might find this link invaluable.

Brian Smith tested a whole range of EF lenses on the A7Rii, which I believe should represent pretty strongly how they will work on the A7ii with new firmware.

check it out!!

His list is really outdated. Since metabones is constantly updating, things have changed. I use the 135L when needing the reach or wanting best IQ, however use 100f2 for balance of IQ and size. Fantastic portrait lens, with less flaws than the 85f1.8.

They both lock on the face fast and track. Sometimes if you're severely oof and have to do a full rack, it can have issues, but simply MF override a bit and you're OK. Very rare that it happens in practice. I shoot low light performances all the time, the 135 is killer in that scenario.

I can confirm this combo works fine with the new 2.0 firmware update! A7ii with commlite adpater. Used with my Canon 17-40L and 50 1.8Stm lenses. The phase detection AF. I didn't see too many posts on this other than a few YouTube videos recently. Just wanted to put this out there cause I was looking for answers also. I think there's only one for EF lenses and another for Efs (crop lenses). I got the ef lens adapter commlite. It was about $70. Never tried the metabones but for my casual shooting needs, it would do. I saw on a YouTube video the viltrox lens adapter is even faster. I'll link it below...https://youtu.be/nnx7IBDj52o (external link)

AF etc works fine with 24 2.8 IS, 50 STM, 100L and 200Lii with my A7ii / Metabones IV combo. I'm hoping to test out how the new Tamron 35 SP or the Canon 35 f2 IS go with this setup over the coming weeks. I'd echo previous comments and say AF speed using PDAF and Continuous AF is nearly as good as my 6D was, and plenty good enough for how and what I shoot, focus accuracy is good.
