Hi i have the 360 and so far love it but i would like to be able to shoot at wedding and receptions and doing some testing with my 360 in a small BD with defuse even on the lowest setting it is still to bright.

So thinking about getting the 180 version as well maybe two of them or one more 360 and one 180 so i have a three light set up but not sure about it if it can go down that low of power.

I would like to be able to shoot at F2.0 to 2.8 at a 60th of a second a lot at iso 800 will be using 1.4 and 1.8 primes for this.
If i use a 180 version with the 12 inch BD on it will i be able to get the flash output down low enough to be able to shoot as close as 2 to 3 feet back from something with out blasting it away.

Might shoot some things as low as F1.8 for detail shots of rings and so on love the 360 but it is to strong for a wedding flash except for the group shots or up on a stand lighting up the room at a reception.
I love the bare bub quality of light even in the BD.

Thanks

Is no one using the 180 version.? Seems like a better flash for wedding use and using lower F Stops.

Hrm,

Good question, I'm sure there are folk using them, just maybe not so many that are here often enough.

If you want to use a 180ws monolight strobe with a battery pack in a beauty dish at lower output values to allow for 1/60s, F2, ISO 800 shooting of portraits, it makes me wonder... at that point, a speedlite can do it at moderate power for a lot less money, and without the extra weight and pack. Have you compared a decent speedlite to a lower power monolight at low power to really see if it matters what's behind the disk of a beauty dish?

Very best,

The 180 is 1 stop less flash output than the 360. You can test your own setup's using your 360 and if it is 1 stop too much light then the 180 will be about right. You can also use ND Gel sheets to lower the flash output from a modifier.

As above, there's not enough advantage over a speedlight, in fact if you're really after larger apertures, a speedlight is a better bet.

I have a 180 and a 360. I bought the 180 early on and I am not sure that two 360's would not be more useful.

With that said the 180 is smaller and lighter than a 360 and has a few major advantages over a speedlight. They are speed of recharging and battery life. You can shoot all day with a 180 but I can not say the same about a speedlight.

Get yourself a V850 or V860 speedlight, perfect for whatt you are looking for, and the same remote trigger system...:)
I use this for my indoor/winter weddings where a smaller amount of power is needed.

I also have one of the V800 series. Mine is an earlier version and the batteries seem to be undependable. However i do believe they fixed that and they are much smaller and more portable.

agree with the use of speedlite instead. If you don't have one already the speed pro s bracket (external link) can quickly change from the 360 to the speedlite.

Otherwise, maybe a ND gel over the 360 would get you where you want to go.

FWIW, an unnamed source mentioned that the 180 is "end of life".

yaa i have looked at the bracket and whith the extra weight of it it comes out to about the same weight as a 180.

I was thinking the 180 would be a better choice as i could use just bair bulb for wide shots and it would be more power then a standard speed light.

I have a lots of speed lights have used them for years i hat how directional they are.

I like using two off camera flash up on stands at wedding receptions if i used two 180s or 360s and used the round dome on them i would have much better light filling the area then using speed lights.

But i have read to that the 180 is no longer being made. So i might end up with a few of the 850s so i can control them and the 360 together.

tough choices, for sure. Love having plenty of options, but hate lugging around gear everywhere and charging a ridiculous amount of batteries.

I have put the dome thing on inside a larger modifier. Just assemble everything except the outer diffuser making sure the bulb is inside the modifier far enough, then place the dome on the flash, cuts output a bit, but honestly not sure how much. Probably close to a stop.

just to go back to my suggestion of ND gel over the light, here is how I created a CTO gel. I continue to be amazed at how durable this thing is, i beat the crap out of it an have yet to have it not pop back into shape after being pulled out of a pile of brackets.
