..... i only had four days to hang out on the North Shore - no surf - then, on the day I return home, it was 10-18ft at Pipeline

I didn't see any of the competition, but, it was still great just to be there at PipeMasters

Mate, I feel your pain and nearly always have the same bad timing as you. I have travelled to Hawaii from Perth, Australia, 5 times over the last 5 years to see the Vans Triple Crown, and although I have seen some great surf there, I have always just missed the really epic monster swells...Always leaving a bit too early, arriving a bit too late, or on the wrong damn island when it is going off. Despite even spending 3-4 weeks on Oahu on some trips, I still missed the massive swells. I think the only way to guarantee being there at the right time is to spend the entire winter on Oahu.

I have still been lucky enough to see Pipe & Sunset at least double overhead or more, but they have had some massive monster swells over the last few years which I have sadly missed due to poor timing.

The North Shore is an awesome place to shoot when it is pumping. Nothing else compares.

Here's a couple of mine from Pipe & Backdoor.

John

I am sure we have been on the same North Shore beach's at the same time over the last twenty years

As for the big surf, I was lucky to be there once for the Eddie Aikau Open at Waimea - standing way back off the shore line

Unfortunately, I didn't have my cameras!

Just being there was good enough

Thanks for sharing those images; now I think I will return to Oahu in January!

all the best to you in the New Year

Andrew
