Sony A7x lounge

I use my FE 24-70 and Samyang 135mm as my main lens (and occasionally, the FE 28mm)... and boy they produce amazing images... the sharpness doesn't bother me anymore (used to be a pixel peeper). Same goes for the lack of AF.

After I focused more on composition and mood, my images improved 100%.

I started a series called "A Glimpse into Japan". The idea behind this is to recreate the stereotypical images people have of Japan, whether it's the brightly-lit neon cities, or the serene countryside towns in the middle of nowhere. These first few photos will be of the big city, as I'm currently living in Tokyo at the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to venture more into the countryside towards the end of the month.

These images were shot on a Friday night, when office workers let their tie loose and drink the night away with their colleagues and friends. They are from the Shinbashi and Ueno parts of Tokyo.

This first one is of a local restaurant street in the suburbs of Tokyo (Sangenjaya). On Friday nights and weekends, these are filled with people getting off work, families, or groups of friends. It's a great way for local people to wind down and relax.

I went to a "Yokocho" (drinking/pub street) on a weeknight, hence half of the shops are closed. It was a cold winter night, so not too many people were out too, but the dim, grundy atmosphere really help sets the mood for this shot. The alleys are narrow, with the occasional drunk "salaryman" throwing up or pissing in the corner.

So many years ago I spent some time in Tokyo living on the edge of society. It was within a group of traveling artists, one a kid from New York who was into photography. He only had a Nikon SLR and one lens. What he liked to capture was precisely the same sort of images as I see here. And I am glad to see them, to know that this much has remained unchanged from my youth.

^^Nice series. These remind me of when I visited Yokosuka in 1966.

I don't tend to shoot BIF, but I borrowed my Dad's 25 year old Sigma 400mm f/5.6 and adapted it my Sony A7. Keep in mind this shot was taken using manual focus and without IS.

I almost bought that model lens last month for around $130.... thought it might work well with the stability in the 7rII.

Instead I am looking at a tamron 200-400 for $90.

Good work.. makes you appreciate those old film long lens guys.

Riverboat tour in Costa Rica with the A7Rii (latest software), Metabones IV T (latest software) and the Sigma 24-105 F4 OS (a lens I bought to use exclusively with my 5DSR for portraits)

Update on how they all worked together
- brutal
- every 1 to 2 minutes the lens would lose some kind of connection with the adapter / camera (I think) and the F stop would stop registering so the camera would jump out of autofocus into manual focus mode
- but the setup needed 'rebooted' (remove lens / re-attach lens) to restart AF
- this seriously pissed me off but I tried to make it work as there was usually, but not always, time between different animals showing up to be photographed
- i only wanted to bring one camera and one lens so I decided to go with the this setup - this is a vacation with the wife and most of the time my Samsung phone and quick updates to facebook to family and friends is all I wanted to do - as such I really, really should have gone with the 7D2 or 5DSR and a white lens
- when the camera was working the AF in either Single or Continuous worked well enough for a fun outing but having a 7D2 with different BBF buttons setup for moving or still animals would have resulted in far more pictures (again this was a fun vaca so I'm not upset about it - the A7Rii is a great portrait camera)

This was a 1hour boat cruise, in a national park, where the banks had wildlife everywhere: crocs trying to pounce on monkeys drinking water, monkeys trying to pounce on young iguanas, small birds following our boat and bigger birds flying away from us - a 7D2 with a 70-200 or 100-400L would have been perfect.

I also went on a rainforest walk and just took my cellphone because it was pouring the entire walk and the Sigma is not weather sealed and I don't trust the Sony - on that adventure a 7D2 with a 24-70 F2.8 (all weather sealed) would have been perfect.

I studied Japanese for 3 years (two years in high school and another year during my undergrad). I've always been fascinated by Japanese culture....but admittedly mostly the stereotypical Japanese culture that we know here in the west. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your series.

The thing that fascinates me the most about Japan is the "Katana". A piece of fine craftsmanship.
