$2500...

Thats the hard pill to swallow. Looks like a good lens sure, but $2500 for a 300mm f/4? Ouch. Its a 600mm f/8 equivalent, So APS-C you're looking at a 400mm f/5.6...

You can get the Sigma 150-600 S for $1800, Which gets more reach. You can get a Canon 300mm f/4L IS + 1.4x TC for $1780, Nikon's 200-500 is $1396, Canon's 100-400 II is $2100...

To put this in perspective, Right now you can buy a D7200 and a 200-500 for the price of the Olympus 300 f/4... You lose 1 stop of speed but gain a zoom, which can be handy in this type of thing...

Panasonic has a Leica 100-400 for $700 less

No doubt its going to be a good lens, Seriously, But the price point feels steep, I bet this one will drop in price significantly

Have a look at the price for their old 300/2.8! In Australia it's still $1k more than the Canon.

Yikes.. i mean i guess i can somewhat get that.. Canon probubly benefits from a larger user base and economy of scale, Olympus simply doesn't have the userbase for that sort of thing... its $6500 in the US... That means its $400 more than the Canon f/2.8L IS II here, the Nikon is $5500 tho..

Just seriously feel that Olympus should have gone a different path with it... I see they could really use a wildlife sort of lens after all, just not sure a 300 f/4 prime at $2500 is the lens they should have made

They've already done a 90-250/2.8 (at another outrageous price) which would be a cool medium telephoto on a m4/3 body.

I don't know that it's a crazy price - a new Canon 300/4 would be priced similarly and the Nikon 300/4 PF is also similarly priced

Fair enough i suppose..

I mean its still a great lens, i dont think i even doubt such a thing, its probubly VERY tack sharp (I mean.. Oly makes some fantastic glass for m4/3) and perhaps if it was around $2000 id not be balking.. its that extra $500 that makes me cringe because as i said, you can get the same FoV from a D7200 + 200-500 VR which costs the same. Maybe part of it is the Nikon and the Canon lens are both known to be exceptionally good AF lenses and I question if the Oly has the same AF performance when it comes to tracking. But hey, I've not used it, and thats an unfair assumption. This is also coming from someone seriously considering getting an Oly/Panasonic m4/3 camera at the moment mind you.

Fair enough, it weighs quite a bit more. but still.. For wildlife i think id rather my 7D and a Sigma 150-600 or a Canon 300 f/4L IS

Weight: Olympus keeps proving wrong the people who claim that mirrorless and/or short register distance should mean lighter telephoto lenses.
