This is a shot where I used my Nikon D600 and 50mm f1.8 lens to image the Milky Way core for roughly 1 hours worth of 3 minute exposures (using a tracking mount), then took the 50mm lens off and put a Rokinon 24mm f1.4 lens on and took a foreground shot. I had started a fire while letting the camera do its thing imaging the Milky Way so I decided to use that as my foreground. I then merged the sky shots and the foreground shot to create a sort of surreal nightscape.

^ Fabulous two images used, but I think stitching is less than perfect - should have been sharper, to match the sharpness of the skies.

Here is my quick-n-dirty photoshopping exercise:

Thanks, I was trying to make that transition from foreground to sky a little less harsh, when I masked the foreground it just looked a little...odd, I guess, in terms of matching the sky. I actually ended up going back and re-editing the sky because I wasn't happy with the color balance and detail throughout, so it gave me a chance to address the foreground a bit better.

I also made another one from my trip out to the Bonneville Salt Flats west of Salt Lake City this weekend:

This one is better, but what is still missing is the fogginess of the skies near the horizon. Not quite sure how to get it right; you likely will have to play with reducing contrast, making stars a bit redder, and probably introducing another ("fog") white-bluish semi-transparent layer between the skies layer and foreground layer.

Hmm, how about something like this, I created a gradient over the lower portion of the sky shot, decreased contrast and shadows/whites, increased saturation a little, then in Photoshop I layered in some very thin clouds from another picture and lowered their opacity a bit:
