I have a friend who has a 18-55 kit lens that came with his 20D and it would not mount on my 10D . Why did this happen?

The 18-55 is a EF-S mount lens and your 10D will only accept EF mount lenses.

Canon 20D
10-22 f/3.5-4.5
50mm f/1.8
24-70 f/2.8L
70-200mm f/2.8L

The 18-55 is an EF-S lens and won't mount on a 10D. It will only work on the 2 digital Rebel's and the 20/30D's.
