Amazing stuff. So, they're on the endangered species list?

It is on the state list of species of concern but not federal. It is protected under the federal migratory bird act. (source=Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission website)

Apparently they were really low in numbers here not long ago but have been making a comeback. There seem to be numbers of them here in Palm Beach County and also apparently there are lots of them at Merritt Island NWR which is near Titusville, by the space center. I see them in numbers at several of the wetlands I visit regularly. They are really cool birds, sort of ugly in a way and also quite beautiful. One of my goals this year is to see a nest with chicks. Working on it.

Peter, where have you been getting the eagles? In years past I have an annual visit to the Skagit River during this time of year. But this year, I've gone twice and nothing of significance. You know its a bad sign when you don't even see gulls or ravens.

As I was leaving the second trip a local told me the salmon run was down in the Skagit, but higher on the Nooksack. That is a bit further north, and I will probably not be able to make that trip.

Sorry for the late reply Abacus...this was up north by the Mosquito lake Bridge.

QUOTED IMAGE

Very strange year here in Southern Ontario ! More Snowies than I've ever seen ! I've never seen Sandhill Cranes in my area and I saw 4 a couple weeks ago. A rare Vermillion Flycatcher has been attracting birders from all over and there has also been a Gyrfalcon around. I would LOVE to get a shot of that !

What is the nearest airport in this area Shooz? Thanks

Nearest would be Detroit. I'm about an hour from there. There have been quite a few reports of Snowies in the Windsor area too, which is right across the river from Detroit.

Yeah, thought about that after I posted. Detroit airport is about a half hour from the border. Border crossing is anyone's guess as to how much time. So 2 hours from Detroit airport would probably be more accurate.

Great thanks and if you don't mind one more question from border how long is the drive to see the snowy owls. Thanks

From the border to the ones in my area is about an hour. If you are making the trip, I will take you there. If you don't want to go that far into Ontario, I can possibly arrange for someone to take you to some in the Windsor area (close to Detroit).

Cool I will think about it, maybe after the NFL playoff. I worked with an airline and I will check my schedule from work and check my vacation hours maybe I can swing at least a day of 2. Thank you very much for your offer. Do you think the Owls stay til first part of Feb?

Windsor also has an airport, and so does London, Ont. Both are about an hour from Blenheim.

Considered that option, but I doubt that either of those airports would have direct flights from Seattle. He would have to take a connector flight and would still be an hour away.

Hard to say if they will stay, or not. They've been here for over a month now. I can definitely keep an eye on them and let you know.
