I decided to try out a combination that I've seen so many here and on FM rave about and use as their stealthy rig - 300 2.8 and 2x TC. Works pretty good, I'd say. I may have to tweak the AFM settings a bit, but not bad.

Here was a willing subject. She was out by herself and has been on numerous previous visits (looks like the same girl).

Don't often use this lens for VB, but decided to goof around at non-conference match

A few questions if I may - can you lug this lens around for 20-30 minutes and take some shots, all hand-held? Also, how does it fair for portraits or shots of children, say in a park? Thanks

I use a sling strap to carry it so little neck stress. Sometimes when I am doing tennis I hand hold for several hours a day, but I am a big guy. Never used it for portraits of kids in a park but have used it for shots of cross country in a park and it produced nice bokeh.

It all depends if you are physically fit enough to carry it for that time frame. If so, you should have no problems at all.

I use the Black Rapid R strap attached to the foot. The strap is good because the foot is so small that it's difficult to carry by hand for a long time. Also, I tend to hand hold it when shooting football games (day games) and when I shot my daughter's cross country meets. I and hand hold it at zoos.

Many bird photographers use it (hand hold) with the 1.4 and 2x TCs as their weapon of choice.

It will produce nice portrait shots, but I am sure you know you will have to zoom with your feet. :p

Displaying Great snipe (Gallinago media)from northern Norway in low evening light and a Suacco heron from Crete (Greece) in early morning sun. A great lens in deed!! I use the 1.4xIII nearly all the time when light allowes me. The Snipe done with 2x (600mm).
