My friends, i would like a little insight about my configuration of the AF and the way i have it on my 7d2.

I have always used the shutter button as the metering and af start button (AI SERVO, Single Point AF, Case 1), but as the 7d2 is so costumizable, i started using the * to activate ZONE AF With AI SERVO and Case 4. The AF-ON i use to ONE Shot and Single Point. That, i think this way i got most situations covered.

The question is: As i press the * to activate the ZONE AF/AI SERVO/Case4, and then the shutter button (Single point, AI Servo, Case1), will the shutter button configuration disregard the Case 4 settings and use the Case 1 that is assigned to it? I'm guessing not, cause at least the ZONE AF keeps tracking with all points...

Probably a silly question... l o l

Thanks!

not a silly question actually

the camera seems to have built in logic that if you are pressing 1 button that asks for X autofocus points, and then you press an additional button, while still pressing the first button, that asks for Y autofocus points, and Y > X, the button with the Y points will determine what is going on

you can easily test this but in my quick tests this always appears to be the case

if fact, i have setup the Depth of Field Preview Button deliberately to kick the System into an even higher # of AF points (all of them - you should give it a try), I call it my crazy mode, so that I can start with the AF-ON BB Autofocus using AI-Servo Single Point, I can push * to activate AI-Servo Zone, and then while doing either, I can push the DoF button (with my right ring finger) that kicks it up another notch (you can also customize many of the tracking features while doing this in the sub menu)

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

You may have a conflict between your BBF (Af-on you set to one shot) and the Focus button being in Servo. Give it a test and let us know what you observe whether focus stays locked from BBF.

I might of misunderstood what you wrote, but having the * programed to activate ZONE AF & Case 4 (keep pressing...) and then pressing the shutter button with Single Point AF & Case 1, i maintain the 1st selection, ZONE AF. That is easily seen in the viewfinder with all the Zone AF Points tracking the subject.

What i can't confirm is the Tracking Case that is used, but i guess that it would be the one associated with the pressing of the * (Case 4 and not the one linked to the shutter button Case 1).

Gotta take a look at the manual...
