It shouldn't since the BBAF is driving the AF. The shutter button merely meters and takes the photo since you've disengage it from the AF process when you enabled BBAF.

Don't you have to explicitly remove focus from the shutter button?

I have not modified the actions of my shutter button so I am not a true BBAFer. I haven't tested my settings extensively but current expected results with default camera settings of one shot AF, center point only and back buttons used to modify behaviour I get

Shutter button = focus+metering+shutter
'*'= toggle drive mode; camera in one shot it shifts to AI servo and vise versa
AF-ON= AI servo, 25pt zone, case 6

As far as I've tested it looks like it is operating as expected.

Well since you mentioned Quetzals and this is a 7Dii thread...maybe I posted, can't remember, surely I did
but Quetzals are a devil for me to image.....easy to find but NEVER in good light. I had to process this one
forever to get something even postable and its marginal at best. I could have spent another hour defringing but
I was tired of it by then and I guess satisfied.

Einstein. White faced monkey in the Palo Verde national park. They come very close to the boat. 100-400 with 600 RT and better beamer.

The warning about the better beamer burning your flash, etc is true. I was holding the rig in my hands and it projected some sunlight onto my hand and burnt it a bit. Not bad but I felt a good sting.

I don't have any quetzal shots from Savegre that are quite that nice, but a few were ok

I will try to do better in Monteverde, but I like the first of the two below, since this bird is all about the tail...
and the highlight was seeing two males doing an aerial display--

I have started two fires with the better beamer carelessly left in my car. One burned a hole in the leather upholstery in my passenger seat. Both fires would have been much worse if I hadn't smelled smoke..

I wonder if those pesky fires are the reason it's not called the Best Beamer?

Excellent portrait!

I have taken shots of this bird with my 7Dii and 1Dx. The 1Dx has better focusing and much less noise. But the FOV on a crop is nice if the light is good enough and ISO is below 500. I do have more bird keepers with the 7Dii for some reason.
