Craig your Tamron is much sharper than mine on the 7d2. If mine consistently produced images like those I wouldn't have bought the Canon 100_400 ok. Great shots!

On a serious note, where does your Af point land when displayed/overlayed on these images? It appears to me on the branch immediately to our left of the bird. If however, it is solidly on the bird, you might need to add some + mfa.

in the first image single af point to the below left of the eye (purple color), I just double checked it with AF plug in. 2nd image is single auto focus point on the eye lower part .

The branch lower part? look soft to me. at least in my monitor :)
