You put more faith in strangers on the Web than in Canon.

mate i suspect you may have some alleged association with our friends canon by the style and content of your replies in the past to any muted criticism or questioning of canon gear and we are all users some more experienced than others of course and i sit in the midlle ground there no problem - but thats ok that your a big fan perhaps with or with out some commercial interest and thats fine with me no problem at all - but for me the jury is out sadly on why and how the 7dmk 11 does occasionally give a focus scare including mine could be me could be the camera - so no not changing the firmware and not taking your web based advice either

cheers and best

I have 1.0.5 and have had no issues with it since it came out.

BTW, the AF system change from the 7D to 7DII and after updating the firmware has greatly improved the AF accuracy with my 50 f/1.4.

Yes Peter, my Tamron 150-600 with the 7d2 isn't as sharp as I think it should be. It is terrific on my 6d and the brief time I had the 1d4 and the 70d it was sharp on those bodies. Mine, like yours is from the very first production run/release. I believe the newer ones such as Craig's copy are not as prone to copy variation.
The 100-400 ii though just feels like it was designed with the 7d2 in mind.
I have a 1.4x TC that should be in my mailbox today or tomorrow that I will use on that combo. I have to decide if I'm selling the Tamron or just pair it with my 6d. If I don't sell it I have to sell something else or risk having my wife skin me alive!

I think the issue is the lens emulation software Tamron uses. According to this site it is saying it is the EF 90-300. I believe the 7DII's software adjusts the AF to match the reported model's specs. I have found that static objects I do very well with the Tamron but in flight is not very good. You need to set the focal length to 400mm where it will lock BTW, and disable VC.

The 7DII and 100-400II with 1.4TCIII works very well and quite sharp. AF is a little slower and shows that with BIF but you can still get some sharp shots. Make sure you change the lens to mode 2 for BIF as that does help. IS definitely fights you in mode 1.

Didn't the early Tamron's need to be sent back for some sort of firmware update? I might be confused.

No, you're not confused. An undefined number of the early release Tamron's 150-600 had focus hunting issues with certain camera bodies. And maybe they all did but you were not affected if you didn't have one of those cameras. I think the 7D was one of the models. I believe lenses that hit the store shelves after April 2014 were supposed to have the new firmware already installed. This is much the same as the firmware updates for the 7D2 addressing issues with certain lenses.

I didn't send my tamron in for the software upgrade (received late May 2014) as I don't find the focus hunting excessive compared to my Canon 'kit' lenses.

I love my OCD neighbor, as he is kind enough to clear the snow off our pond. :) This is more just a funny photo than one that is technically good.

It IS a funny photo. He is going the wrong way. He should be throwing the snow toward the nearest side, and walking up and back to the left and right, not up and down in the photo.

Sorry guys, didn't mean to start a FW version war.

For me and my camera, based purely on my own uneducated, non professional experience, I decided to roll back to 1.04 from 1.05, I MAY have seen a slight improvement or I may have just imagined it.

YMWV depending entirely on you.

Best to just get back to shooting and posting some awesome shots, so if you've got em, post em .. :)

Cheers
Gus

Yes I sent it back then when it was having a poleob with 7D regarding Ai servo.

Can anyone point me to the link for the 1.04? I know it was posted earlier but I can't find it and google is no help. I know for sure that I get more missed focus with 1.05. I was bang on the button with 1.02 and 1. 04 wide open but I find I'm having to stop down most of the time to get anywhere near the results that I was getting straight out of the box and MFA is ok

cheers
