More and more this next image is what I'll be trying to achieve -an active subject with a "properly" exposed background. I try to set up in an area that will allow me to shade the subject, and that has quite a bit of natural light in the background. In this case it's the concrete wall that runs around my garden. I've set the camera to under expose that wall somewhere between 1 and 2 stops. Then I set the flash to E-TTL mode (-1/3 FEC) and let the camera use the light meter to expose the subject with the flash. The main thing is that you don't want to get too close to the natural light exposure for the subject otherwise you will record some movement (usually shows up like a shadow in the areas that moved while the shutter was open). Also if the sun is hitting the subject you'll get some odd specular highlights (often blown out) and some motion that has an almost rainbow property to it. Of course I've used a syringe to place some artificial nectar on the flower (1:1 sugar syrup with a little butterfly nectar mix added) otherwise this girl would not have let me get close.

Tech Specs: Canon 70D (F11, 1/125, ISO 200) + a Canon EF-S 60mm macro lens with 37mm of extension + a diffused MT-24EX (flash head "A" set as the key and "B" as the fill, with the key on a Kaiser flash shoes). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.
