That's odd, they're a lot bigger than those tiny red mites. Then again it was a while before you found a Robberfly which are very common in my area. Maybe related to the different habitats, Richmond Park being predominantly acid grassland, LordV's garden being predominantly John Innes No3 :-)

Think some bugs don't like the sea air :)
I only see Robber flies up on the South downs.
