I only use AI Servo with it. I couldn't trust ONE SHOT. it takes a little bit to get used to it, but man I love this thing.

Thanks for the tip. Yes it was set to one shot. I will try AI Servo

for me, it helps. at 1.2, if your subject or you moves even a little bit its going to throw it very off. if you use a flash with a infrared AF assist, it makes it spot on just about every single time. I have even considered just buying a infrared AF assist by itself..

Wow never heard of that infrared rf assist, can you recommend couple of certain ones? I've had a 85L but wanting to shoot portraits at 1.2 but it's so hard to get it sharp. I know about user error so I use manual focus with magnify and focus peaking

well, its not necessarily made for it. But I was thinking about something like the Canon ST-E2, or the yongnuo version. they shoot out infrared just like flashes do.

again, I don't have issues. my 85 1.2 MK I is killer with AF, I've even used it for people jumping and moving. When people say that they struggle with the AF and such, I'm kind of confused.

Finally I was able to take some quick test shots of my kid. Used Ai-Servo and burst mode to nail the focus. Also had to micro adjust camera to -7. Still I need alot of practice to nail focus at 1.2

Having followed this thread for a long while, I think counter-intuitevaly this lens would actually be better for full-body shots rather than headshots.
For just headshots, the DOF is just way to small to consistently get both eyes in focus.
On the other hand, it can create some really "fairy-tale" like shots if we step back a little for full body shots to increase Depth of Field.

Love the colors in this photo. Model is gorgeous complementing the colors and vice versa.

One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

Here's a quick shot I grabbed right after the driver pulled off to fill up with race fuel.
