Why not the sigma art 35mm f1.4? It is sharp. I used to owned one with my former 5D3.

A good option and, to Carlo's point, may be more on the side of microcontrast. But, I too have owned one before and my copy was a F'ing disaster. If it focused near MFD it would get stuck...I literally had to give it a helping hand. Lots of people have AF issues with the Sigma. And, since it has a tiny focus pull from MFD to infinity, it's worthless as a manual focus lens.

There is one other thing that bugs me with the Sigma 35mm: it has some funk in the color. When I look at all the 35mm lenses I have owned/tested it has the worst color rendition of them all by comparison. That's subjective and personal of course, but it's another thing that makes me hesitate. BTW, when I look at all the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 photos I see fantastic color, so I don't think it is necessarily a Sigma thing; just a 35mm Art thing.

Nonetheless, I may indeed circle back to that option. Price is certainly right.

Is this comparable to Canon DO (Diffractive Optics) or softfocus lenses?

Not too familiar with the DO lenses, but soft focus lenses typically allow for more spherical aberration. Not too popular with the tastes of modern photography...my most blatant and recent experience with this came from the EF 50L vs the FD50L. The FD 50L has an aspherical element to correct spherical aberration....the EF 50L (the newer lens) purposely does not. The EF 50L is known for its dreamy rendering and buttery smooth bokeh...but was not an MTF beater by any means. The FD50L was actually sharper in my experience, but bokeh was not as nice.

That is a helpfully clarifying post. In my quest for 35mm happiness I have a new Canon 35L II coming in tomorrow to test, and you've made me even more suspicious (than I already was) that it is a soft turd. You see I prefer microcontrast over buttery-smooth bokeh (wish I could have both!!) and what your saying helps me understand why. Although it has awesome specs, the 35L II doesn't appear to produce interestingly rendered images.

Still, I do want to test it out for myself; maybe I'll really like it. I sincerely hope I do. If not my next try could be the classic Zeiss Distagon T* 2/35mm ZE (Canon-mount) - I know for sure that that one excels at microcontrast.

My impressions of the 35LII are the same as yours based on what I've seen in the samples David. That thing is an MTF master, but the rendering looks very flat.

The flip-side to this is the Sigma 35 Art. Micro contrast monster but nervous, nervous bokeh.

There are certainly lenses that excel for that portrait glow. The nikon 50 1.2 ais, the nikon 105mm f2.5 ais, both seem to have quite a bit of glow effect, and the 105 retains great sharpness and overall contrast wide open.

Or the Samyang 35/1.4 ;) It can be had for under $300 these days which is absurd as it's one of the best 35mm's out there according to several reviews.

I just ordered a new Samyang lens... but it's for my Fuji :) I was torn between the UWA adapter for my 28mm or the Samyang 12mm f2 for my Fuji and in the end I went with the Samyang.

I haven't gotten it yet, just ordered it today ;)

Are you saying you adapted a M43 lens to E mount? I didn't even know that was possible. I also assumed that the SY 12mm would vignette like crazy on an a7 camera... is that the case?

yes they make an adapter for m43 to nex,i have a 50mm 1.4 a 85mm 1.4 and the 12mm f2 and they are all native m43 mount and work on the a7,the 12mm vignettes but i can use it in apc mode,i prefer my 14mm 2.8 for wide shots though not in apc mode,
i paid 6$ for the adapter,it was on sale amazon but its 30 now,i wish i bought 2,they work great and i don't mind buying m43 specific lenses knowing i can use them on both my fave cams,
