I noticed that your settings are iso 500 and 1/250 shutter speed. Are these shot using a flash?

Yes. I was using 4 Alien Bee B800s set up like the following:

So, with 4 at one end like that, what power were the bees set at?

Full Power. It's the only way to go. It yields greater exposure above ambient and the duration of the bees are shorter at the highest power setting.

Ah, ok, agree with you on that with the Bees. I use Einsteins though. Durations get shorter at lower powers.

But you have me thinking, usually my Einsteins are at about 1/4 power. With 4 at one end, maybe could go to 1/8 or lower for even shorter durations and quicker recycle.

As long as you can get sufficient above ambient, it's worth a try. The darker the gym, the better that would work.

Phil, love the shots and thanks for sharing the strobe setup.

I'm now wishing I had four strobes myself as I don't believe my two Einsteins will be powerful enough when bounced to overcome ambient by 3- to 4-stops for a HS basketball game tomorrow. Night game was rescheduled to daytime and the windows don't let in enough light to overcome the shifts in color from the gym's cycling lights.

Full power on the Einsteins is 1/540-sec vice 1/2000-sec at half-power, so even if I could overcome ambient at full power, I'm not getting sufficient freezing power.

Only way to make the strobes work tomorrow would be to direct flash and I'm just not willing to do so at this school as they've been clamping down on the parents photographing from the stands and it took them a while to warm up to the idea of bounced strobes.

Looks like I'll be shooting ambient and doing a lot of WB adjustments in post. The upside for the client (the Boosters) is they'll end up with more photos from the game as I'm not constrained by the refresh rate of the strobes. I hate trading off the quality though.

If I am correct then give the Einsteins a go if the ceiling is white. If you use Alienbee 800 which I believe are one half the power of the Einsteins. 320ws versus 640ws. At half power the Einsteins flash duration will be about 1/1700 which will stop most action in basketball. I have used two Alienbee 1600's at full power and lit up the whole court. From one end to the other there is about 1 f-stop less light.

Thanks John. I was going to give it a try to see what the settings allowed, but the rescheduled game has now been postponed as well due to inclement weather. Hopefully it will end up as a night game.

There should be some nice opportunities to upgrade (at a reasonable price) shortly!
