Having owned an XU-1 until a few years back, I pop into gmh-torana on occasion and can honestly say if you can get over the odd muppet who is only interested in causing grief, then the vast majority of folks posting are there to share their vast store of knowledge gathered over the years of actually doing stuff. It's pretty easy to spot the ones who haven't ever changed the oil in their life...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:
TF posting: here :-)

But, you speak of the forums you're involved with as "Australian forums", so it seems as though they are in some way specific to Australia.
Nevertheless, I would appreciate it if you could post a link to those forums of which you speak; I would like to see the snooty behavior that is there.

.

Tom, might I suggest you reread my original post. I did NOT say I was involved with any Australian forums. And it was YOU who said "I have never visited, or even heard of, an Australian Photography Forum."

Well I'm flabbergasted, other countries have photography forums as well as America, that's incredible. Believe it or not we even have a couple in the UK.

i may be mistaken, but i don't know if Tom R caught the heavy spoonful of smart ass you included in this post. Or maybe he just ignored it? It's a blessing and a curse that I have been granted the ability to both supply my own, and uncover others' loads of, um, sarcasm. Knowing when to ladle it out, and when not to, is a delicate task not to be taken lightly. The importance of accurately making this determination cannot be underestimated, especially on the interwebs.

It's been my experience that photographers are generally very straight shooting  in their language, so when one heaps a big ole dose of sarcasm onto someone else's well meaning and honest post, things get weird.

fwiw regarding the OP, i have noticed on this board that Aussies don't have much of a filter. Further, like Tom, since this is the only photography board I have ever really visited, don't have any experience with regional/country based forums. The only other forums i've ever seen are DPReview and Fred Miranda, and that was mainly when they come up on a google search.

PSA: The above post may contain sarcasm, reply at your own risk | Not in gear database: Auto Sears 50mm 2.0 / 3x CL-360, Nikon SB-28, SunPak auto 322 D, Minolta 20

John,
When I wrote that post I did so with the errant thought that you were the OP.
I thought that it was the OP that said they were "flabbergasted" with what I had written, and based my comments on that misunderstanding.
Thank you for catching my error and bringing it to my attention.

Right, yes, of course it was me who said that.......because until I visited this thread I had never in my life heard of such a thing as an Australian photography forum.
I am not sure why you are making a point of the fact that I said that - it does't seem like a very noteworthy quote to me.
Was there something about me saying that that you found to be noteworthy, or surprising?

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

When I joined this one I had to post A certain amount of replies before I was able to post a photo.
Or I could post it and I had to wait for one of the moderators there to say it was okay to post.
But I think it was the the top one.

Now you get there and as I did posted up a few post then went else where.
But for what ever reason I went back there, may a gluten for punishment.
But I had to have a new count of 25 before I got get into certain sections there.
If you think I am making this up join up there and you will see.

I am now only going there while I wait for the email telling me if I don't post soon I will lose all privileges to the forum.
This is that I will have to do the 25 posts again. And I will be unable to go to certain sections.
Now I think this is fair enough if I was a school kid but I am an adult and to be talked down to like this .
Well I am waiting for my email as the days of not posting are building.
I will let you know when I get the email, might even post it so you all can see the truth and not just my side of this.
But I will not be posting there again so I don't care what happens there next.

I am willing to learn and will listen to what other have to say.
But if I don't like it, never take offense to it.
It is just something that I may not like.

Something there is definitely off.
What concerned me most was the fact that their terms of use require that you basically allow them to use any photos you post in any way they want - a rights grab.

The other thing that turns me off to that site is that, despite a whole lot of very stringent rules, disclaimers, repeated statements that posting there is a privilege and not a right, etc, they basically don't seem to attract many good photographers. I don't understand why they would sound so strict and stern when they should be desperate to get people to participate. They desperately need photographers - not the other way around!
Why do I say this?
Well, I went to take a peek into the sub-forum that contains my favorite genre, Wildlife Photography.
And look what I found:

No wildlife photos posted on the entire forum?
None?
Compare that to what I find here on POTN's Wildlife Photo Sharing sub-forum:

Thanks Tom Riechner for your comments.

But this forum I have totally given up on. I am still a member and this is only so I can go in and have a look about without commenting there.
Those hard rules are only for the those who are deemed outside of the inner circle.
I am on the outer of this circle and I am fine with that, but I do find that the inner circle one can make some harsh comments and not told to back off. While the outer circle mob are given hey watch what you say.

It is also hard to take this forum as a real one as there is one person who used his name as the 3rd person.
Yes he's harmless but why would anyone take what he has to say serious.
And the do run competitions but no matter what you do it is always share between a few of them.
So I completely stopped posting on them.
I am quite sure that one day I will go there to look and I would have been cut of or banned for life.
It will come as no surprise or any loss to me when that does happen.

I am willing to learn and will listen to what other have to say.
But if I don't like it, never take offense to it.
It is just something that I may not like.
