Hello all. When using HSS, how do I get a nice clean sun star like this one, with a nice blue sky?. If I expose the sun correctly then the sky is very dark. On the other hand if I have the sky exposed how I want it then the sun is a big white mess.

Sorry, I can't quite figure out how to link the post I'm talking about to my post. It's on page 49 of this thread, some kind of fungi in the foreground, in the background are trees and sun star. I will now try and figure out how to link the post.

There is a number #1234 at top right corner of each post, click that for a permalink to that post.

Or, click the MQ button on that post an it will be shown as a quote on your reply:

Speedlite 430EX was fired through a silk at full power to camera right, with white foamcore reflector to the left. Knockout mask was generated with two exposures (foamcore b/g present, absent), so image b/g is synthetic. Bracelet was dangling vertically. Shot with Sigma 70/2.8 macro @ f/11.

Some of the tiles are translucent with coloration, so an additional step in post was used to set the amount of (white) backlighting. Fun with layers. :)

Canon, Nikon, Contax, Leica, Sony, Profoto.
