Great candid, and nice repetition of line.

Tyler, First off it is a good beginning image. I never like to offer suggestions unless they are specifically asked for so I hope you don't mind but a few thoughts:

When shooting a woman you want to shoot from a lower angle if possible. At the very least I like to be sitting in a chair so the lens is no more than at chest level looking up. Also try some with you lying on the floor shooting up. The angle will make her look taller. The only thing with shooting low is watch the placement of her head you don't want to be shooting straight up her nose!

The texture on the wall is distracting, consider moving her away from the wall. Something in the neighborhood of 8 to 10 feet. This will also help to eliminate the harsh shadow caused by the flash. Better yet consider a different background entirely. Think about investing in a roll of seamless paper - it is relatively cheap and offers a great backdrop to learn against. Moving her away from the backdrop will also offer some separation between her hair and the background.

What are you currently using to diffuse the flash? I ask because the light is a bit flat right on her face and then falls off quicker than I might have it. I applaud the fact that you don't have any blown out skin in the photo - most guys just learning tend to blow out the forehead.

Try rotating her body toward the camera some. More at a 45 degree angle than the full side shot like you have here. Once you have done that have her place her left hand in a way to create some separation between her left arm and her body. This will help to slim a woman and to show of her figure more. Do the same with the right arm if you can see it. You always want to have separation between the arm and body for a woman.

You have a catch light in her eyes which is very important but in looking at the catch light in her eyes it looks as though you have the light pretty much straight on with only a minimal amount of diffusion. Moving the light up a bit and angling it down toward her as well as rotating her body with create more depth to the light giving more shape to her face and body. You may need to use a reflector down low to kick some light back into her eyes.

I really hope that this comes across as useful and helpful rather than bashing - it is only meant to help you grow.

Above all have fun, be glad you have a wife willing to pose for you (mine will not) and keep shooting and posting!

Thanks for the tips and suggestions! Greatly appreciated! :-)

The shadow under the lip (is that a shadow?) is distracting, but otherwise, I like it!

Excellent shot. Postcard quality (in the sense that it makes me want to go there!)

Finally had the time to finish up a batch of photos that's been sitting on my hard drive for far too long. Here are a few. Will post more later.

Excellent shot. I think this is the tiniest bit underexposed maybe, but I think maybe that's part of what draws you in to study it...
