Been out of town backpacking....trying to get caught up with many threads.
On the 1DXii a quick question using the 2.0 EOS Teleconverter III.
Will I be able to enjoy auto-focus with the EOS 100-400ii ??

Wouldn't that make the minimum aperture f/9?

I don't think so, because it will be more than f8.

You should be able to enjoy AF with the 100-400ii + 2x.... using LiveView. And with the dual-pixel AF, it should be tolerable!

Should still work in live-view. I am using the 7D2 w/ the 2x + 100-400ii and using that to focus on the moon for my 800mm moon shots.

This is more than likely a repost (since I'm always late to the party), but in case someone else didn't see it, this is worth a look.

http://www.raymondphang.com …-and-high-iso-comparison/ (external link)

It shows a 3-stop underexposure between pre-production 1dx2 vs. a 1dx at iso100. The shadow recovery is... dare I say it, Sony-esque.

Is it April yet? I need it to be April.

Will we see this tech on the 5d4?

5Div, I kinda thought 6Dii would be next....I'll have to look at the EOS timeline and see which one is due first.

The 5D3 came before the 6D, I think they usually go down the line.

The 1Dx and 5D3 were both released in March, four years ago and so are (were) both due for an update. I think this time around Canon is going to wait until September or so to release the 5D4 so as to get as many 1Dx II orders through first. Canon has learned that they cannot cripple downmarket bodies so much any more if they plan to compete against Nikon and Sony, so instead they will work the release schedule and get higher end sales from the 'gotta have it now' customer.

It's a full stop more than f/8; it's f/11. f/11 OVF PDAF would be awesome, but it seems like it is very hard to do.

the interwebs tell me that 1DX was announced in October 2011 and was supposed to ship in February or March 2012, but didn't ship until june 20th (external link).

The 5D III was announced March 2nd 2012 and began shipping a few weeks later. Canon wanted to hit the 25th anniversary of the EOS system and 75th anniversary, so that (of course) might not be exactly the same as what we are going to get in 2016. I think it shows a willingness to get the gear out there if needed, and I think they need to. I believe it was earlier in this thread that i thought an argument could be made that in the next 12 months or so every camera outside of the 7D II could be refreshed and it wouldn't be out of line with past product cycles.

As long as there are not manufacturing/production glitches, which was clearly the issue with the 1DX, I think the 5D IV could be sooner. I also wonder about the timing of the 6D. Since it is technically more of a consumer level camera, i would think Canon would want it out by christmas, which is what they did last time with an announcement before Photokina (September) and shipping in November.

Lots of wishful thinking though, as I will probably be waiting a year after the 6D II announcement to pick one up. I don't really want to wait two years for a new camera.

I know the 100-400 is variable aperture f/4.5 to f/5.6, but since lenses AF wide open wouldn't you add two stops to the f/4.5? So adding a 2x means it would be trying to focus at f/9, right?

At 100mm, yes. But why are you shooting the zoom at the wide end with a 2x tc to get a 200mm f/9 when the lens can shoot 200mm without?

At the long end the zoom is f/11 with the tc.

Assuming that a user is adding a 2x TC to the lens, one has to assume they are already reach-limited at 400mm, so at 400mm at f/5.6, 2 stops = f11.

The 1DX II will work at f8 (1.4x TC) with this lens, and with more than center AF point too. It shouldn't AF at all using f11, unless you tape the pins on the converter or have a non-reporting TC, and even then the AF is most likely going to be spotty.
