Valentine's Day themed shoot with my son.

Fuji XT-1, 35/2 WR.

2 light setup. 1 bare speedlite behind and camera left @ 1/128th power. Streaklight 360 @ 1/32nd power in a 28" softbox, camera right.

For shiny subjects, a reflector is not merely fill. Its position and distance plays an important role in defining the subject's shape. Setup:

In front of the black b/g are five stands. From left, (1) special diffuser on grip arm, (2) black stand serving as subject pedestal, (3) two reflectors, (4) Speedlite on doubled grip arm, (5) Profoto head as hard key. I'm still experimenting with the special diffuser, which is a gobo holder fit with three sheets of Rosco Tough Rolux. Closeup:

The generated shadow transition is perfect, and I really like the circular profile when reflected.

What a set up! I'd kill for your stands!

I've got to shoot on site, full body portraits in a few weeks so I'm practicing with my portable setup. Took over the kids play room, and as my son's first basketball season ended last night I got him to model.

Two mismatched YN flashes in 36x24 softboxes on either side aimed straight across at each other to both light the backdrop and backlight the subject. One FL360 in a 48" octo, I was being lazy so I had no diffuser on it. YN-622s Canon 70D with 50 1.4.

Thanks! I always say that support is the best deal in photography: the cheap stuff is real cheap, and the premium brands will last a lifetime (Matthews preferred here). I particularly like steel rollers stands in the studio for strength and mobility, and their low-profile legs make it easy to step over them. Okay, there's $2K of stands and grip arms in that scene, but I don't hear rivets falling out every time I open a stand.

There's a reason why you don't see cheap stands on a grip truck!

I'm a Matthews guy too but I only use black not the chrome equipment.

2 small gridded umbrella boxes with YN685's for hair lights, 7' white parabolic umbrella with Mettle 600AD strobe as key. White walls for fill. 5Diii + 24-70ii

I don't photograph children in studio, but it's February, and it was for a friend. I also don't really use props, so I used a couple of towels and turned them into capes.
