Phenomenal. That unique (literally) stellar performance has me pondering the notion of selling my 16-35mm and using a combo of the SY 14 and 24 in it's place. Both are more usable for capturing the night sky. And f/1.4 has to be super-helpful for keeping ISO levels down.

If I didn't already have the 24-70L II, I wouldn't dream of it, but the 24-70L II is so excellent that I prefer using it over the 16-35mm at 24mm and longer.

OTOH, the 16-35mm is super nice from nice small package with the best sun stars of any lens except the 16-35mm f/2.8L II. But, if I want to capture the night sky more successfully, it might be prudent to switch to tools that do that job better.

t

You pretty much summarize my current thinking process. I still don't feel comfortable replacing my 16-35.

xpfloyd wrote in post #17916586 (external link)
I should add, I wouldn't want to lose the 16-35 personally as I like using filters at the wide end. The SY 14 couldn't be a replacement for me but they compliment each other well I think

And that's my problem too. Filters. Love all my NDs. (I don't use Gnd s anymore).
Not sure about that ND throttle. How's that work? How many stops does it provide? And can you still AF with it?

David Arbogast wrote in post #17916594 (external link)
What filters? Due to the aperture the 14mm is the ideal companion to the ND Throttle. I don't use my GND's much any more - particularly on the a7R II.

xpfloyd wrote in post #17916619 (external link)
Keep forgetting about the ND throttle. I use a lee square CPL, little stopper, big stopper, firecrest 16. Thinking of selling my 3 stop GND as like you say don't really need it on the a7rii

Same here. Again.

Sony A7RII and a bunch of lenses.

The ND Throttle is a dumb adapter - has zero AF or even aperture control. But, these SY/Rok lenses are all manual focus with aperture rings anyway. So, they are perfect for the ND Throttle.
The throttle is fantastic. Fotodiox claims it is a 1-10 stop variable ND, but Charlie says it is more like 2-8 usable stops. I haven't fully tested the complete range myself as I usually just shoot it in Aperture Priority and dial in the ND until I get the shutter speed I want.

For those who have the SY lenses or are thinking of adding them I highly recommend these dumb adaptors (If you are not using the ND throttle) - http://www.amazon.com …-3&keywords=K%2BF+concept (external link)

I have this brand for various manufacturers to NEX and they are all well made. I flocked the inside of mine and leave them permanently attached to the Samyang lenses.

Went out to shoot some long exposures today but there ended up being zero cloud. Shot this with the FE28

The SY wouldn't be the only lens I use with filters, is my point. So the ND throttle does me no good if I still need filters for my Sony lenses, etc.

Those are excellent.

I wonder if the same principle applies to cars as faces. Although I see plenty of excellent portraits taken wider than 50mm, it is generally true that the face just looks proportionally better with longer focal lengths. Might cars just look proportionally better with longer FLs too?

It depends on the car and the look youre trying to achieve. Generally, wide angle lenses tend to make cars look more agressive. A tele lens will show the cars proportions best, but sometimes for sport cars a more agressive look is desired. At least for non moving car portraits.
