Patterns:

My wife hung some cool discs in the window and they cast a really cool shadow pattern when the sun goes through them just right. I'd admired them, but never gave much thought to photographing it until this month. :)

What Am I?

I first was going to photograph this for My Town, as it's something that I noticed was really stressed around here when I first moved to Charlotte. Apparently there's a problem with cankerworms in trees so they recommend everyone bands their trees, which apparently stymies the little buggers. As I was looking for ways to shoot it, I realized if I got up real close it turned into a bit of a "what-am-I" type abstract shot, so I rolled with it and came up with this.

Frozen:

I realized a couple things with "Frozen" as a topic. One, Charlotte wasn't very cold most of February. Two, when it's cold enough for something to be frozen I don't want to be outside, lol. I considered doing a shot of some ice cream or something but just never got around to it. But while I was out and about one day I saw this warning sign at the entrance of a housing development and thought it fit the bill pretty well.

Night Time:
I did not take a single photo for night time all month long, so I'm just gonna post a couple more of my favorite My Town shots from the roll of double exposures:

More My Towns:

This one has a "What Am I" feel to it too - it's a close up of a figure on a wall mural that I zoomed in on during exposure just to get a blur of pretty colors. Public art is big in Charlotte, so I was keeping an eye out for something like that, and just had fun with it.

Same basic idea for this one, but more a straightforward shot. Loved the bold lines and colors. It's a mural on the side of the Carolina Theatre.

I'm hungry at the moment. Can you tell?

Lol, go eat something man! ;)

Could be an interesting month! Updated the first post. :)

Great series Michi. I really like the texture on your double exposure photos. Is that effect done during developing?

OhioHick, your 'what am I' photo looks like a pool one would find in Yellowstone NP.

The other one maybe a part of a hooked rug?

For what it's worth, that is pretty much exactly the stated goal of the thread, and why I started it. From the very first post of not only this thread, but last year's as well:

"The idea behind this is to get out and shoot more – and to look for subjects where perhaps you ordinarily wouldn’t."

And you did a really good job!

Also for what it's worth, that is almost the opposite of the idea behind the thread, lol.

I mean I don't think there's anything wrong with thinking about photos you've taken that fit into the month's topics, but I think trying to recreate them or even improve on them is more along the lines of what this thread is about. It's about having some ready ideas about what to go shoot on those days when you just want to go shoot something but you're not really sure what. It's a way to find yourself looking closely at things you usually might ignore because now they might fit a topic you're looking for, so you find yourself looking for a creative way to shoot something you otherwise might not have shot at all. Looking through photos you've taken in the past for ones that fit a specific topic is certainly something that might interest people though, and might even be a good idea for its own thread.

That being said, they were pretty cool pics!

OK, your game, your rules  Glad you liked the photos.

Don, you got one right and one "close enough." The one from the archives is one of the thermal features, Black Pond, from Yellowstone. The hooked rug is actually a cross-stitch pillow that my wife made. Here's what it looks like:

Thanks! All of that was done in camera, pretty much no editing other than cropping. The texture is from the first exposure - it's the texture of the wall that has "Charlotte" written on it. I took 36 photos of that wall, and then rewound that roll of film and took 36 more shots - putting various scenes around Charlotte on top of the texture-rich Charlotte wall. I kinda love how they came out, and plan to try it again sometime.

It actually looks like needlepoint.

I will let her know. And that's not even one of her better pieces. She has done a couple that look like paintings as the stitches are so small and the patterns have so much detail.

Nothing artistic here, just My Town on a Sunday afternoon.
