WOW. Just discovered this thread, and I've been staring in awe at all of these amazing images for the last couple of hours!

I haven't done much night photography, but I am definitely inspired!!! It seems really difficult to get the quality of shots you all are producing, but hopefully LOTS of playing around with it will get it halfway there.

Question... I only have lightroom - and just upgraded to lightroom 6... can the type of stacking some of you are talking about be done in LR6? Like with the 100+ 30sec. shots?

Thanks!

No. Lightroom will not do stacking.

As mentioned by Bob, LR does not stack, which is one of the major differences between LR and PS. That said, there are many different types of night shots and if you're interested in pursuing shooting at night I wouldn't let not having PS deter you. LR is pretty powerful and just like day shots while you're limiting certain capabilities, there are still many types of shots you can accomplish.

Far more important than having PS is what kind of equipment you're using. The ability to pull data from the dark is largely impacted by how much light your lens is letting through and your camera's sensor to absorb it with the least amount of noise. But even that may not be a deal breaker. Remember that the same rules of day photography apply, so you can eliminate equipment short comings by taking longer exposures. Best thing as said several times in the thread is to go out and shoot. Try during a full to fullish moon, which will make an easier transition from day.

There's free stacking software out there, I've used it before I got photoshop and it works very well... the name escapes me, but a quick Google search will throw up a few results!

I've officially reached the point where I have no idea if I'm posting duplicates. Hope not...

My first ever night shot... it's all one exposure. Nothing compared to what you guys are doing but I thought I would share.

Where was that photo taken, John? In N. Ga. by chance?
