Every winter the Blue Angels reside at NAF El Centro for training and there is an area called the "Hay Bales" at the end (or beginning) of the main runway just outside the base perimeter. There are actually stacks of hay bales where people (mostly photographers) climb up onto to photograph the session. It's quite a rush to have these F/A-18 Hornets fly so close overhead. Nothing you'd ever experience at an air show. When the four jets flew over our heads not only did we almost get blown over but the sheer volume of those after burners was pretty intense specially when you felt the vibrations down to your bones. Many more on my Flickr page.

That would be awsome experience. Can anyone show up there or do you need special permission. Excellent pics too.

Anyone can go on most training sessions. I heard that three days or so before an air show people will be asked to leave the area though.

Here are a few of them coming in to land. A rough estimate would put them about 30 feet overhead during the pass. So very awesome.

Awesome indeed. I could not imagine being that close. Do the Blue Angels post their training schedule?

Thanks everyone, glad you enjoyed the images. Going again this Thurs. Sjammer, I don't think they post anything. You kind of have to know someone who knows the schedule.

This may not seem like much of a shot and well, it might not be, but this guy is doing a high-speed pass at just under mach. Closer he got the harder it was to pan him. Difficult to photograph but so exciting specially being so close.

Great shots... Ar 75 years old, lack of mobility prevented me from climbing onto the hay bales. I wasn't afraid of the fall, just the sudden stop at the end of the fall.

What lens were you using? I used my 300mm f/4L IS on a 7D camera. I have a new 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II coming and if it arrived, I would have gone to the shoot again.

As it goes, I am going to the Planes of Fame 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor Airshow on Saturday, April 30th and purchased the early bird tickets.

I will definitely have my new lens by then and will have practiced with it.
