At the moment, I have no camera.
All I got is a Sony RX100 point & shoot.

I like the Sony A7II / A7RII, but the slower focusing, and the limited lenses they offer is not making me want it.
The other only option right NOW seems to be the 5Diii.

I do not have the money to spend a fortune.
But if I get a used 5Diii, I should be okay.

But, is it worth considering that camera now?
Or would anything be coming out around summer or later this year that I might like even more?
Perhaps saving a bit more to get something better.

I am NOT into the Nikon cameras, but what would be the Nikon version(s)?

*Wildlife, landscapes, underwater, etc. (Fast, low light needed)
*Video would be nice to have it, but not really required that much as it would be more for personal

A 6D would do for you, I think. It is half the price of a 5DIII. It has different controls, though.

I looked into it a while back, it didnt seem to be as good for wildlife and fast action stuff.

No argument from me about the fast action stuff. I picked up a 70D a while ago because AF/AI-Servo on the 6D didn't work well for me.

Sure it's fine to consider a 5D3 right now. If that's what you need.

But since you're saying you have a RX100 and nothing else, and you want a dSLR, why? You say you need something for landscape, action, underwater, etc, but you don't want to spend a fortune. Well, since you even said that, that says to me that you don't know the fortune that is underwater dslr photography. You may not even need a dSLR for this. Lighting is more important anyways for underwater stuff.

Wildlife, well, a lens and preparation is more important than the camera within reason. But taking a 5D3 and a 70-200 out for a wildlife romp, compared to the guy with an old $150 40D and a 500mm lens, you'll see a big difference and why I'm saying what I did. If you're into wildlife, budget for a lens not for a camera.

So you are at two very costly extremes. The need for a long lens that is costly. And the need for underwater housing & lighting for a dSLR, which is super, super costly.

What's your budget? I hope you have $10k just sitting around. That's a start for this kind of setup.

Maybe try and be more specific about what you're trying to accomplish? If your budget is going to be a problem after a used 5D3, then my suggestion is to re-think things.

Very best,

Actually, I shouldn't have really mentioned underwater. I'm using the RX100 for that.
But, it was a consideration of getting a housing for a dslr in the future for better images.

What underwater housing do you use for the rx100?

If wildlife and fast action is all you after, forget about mirrorless. The only choice you have is Canon 7DII plus a 5D4.

It is easy.
If video is important than I would definitely wait for 5D mk4 or just get 7d Mk2/70D now.
If video is second though, just get the 5D mk3 now.

Why? because the DUal Pixel AF focusing of newer Canon DSLR's during video is truly remarkable, makes me shoot video much more since getting the 70D ;-)a

7D2 or new 80D

Sony 6300

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

if you want to stay small, the Sony a6300 has amazing focus capabilities and comes in at a $1000. Stick to native lenses or if you can get a metabones IV adapter and shoot canon lenses that focus very fast.

There are a lot of choices out there for you, it just all depends on where and how you want to spend your money. What sort of glass are you considering? 300 and 400 primes? 150-600 zoom?

For Canon, 7D2 or 1D4 are great all-around cameras with an edge towards wildlife (and sports). The 5D3 gives you true FF and a low-light/landscaping edge. Glass options are as good as it gets. IMO this should be your first consideration.

For Nikon, D7100 is going for sub-$500 on sale seemingly every other week--Adorama last week, IIRC. It won't give you that lightning FPS and the buffer is limited. The D7200, for twice the money, improved the buffer but it still isn't a 7D2. The D750, per the reviews, is an unbelievable FF all-around body for less than the cost of a 5D3. Glass options are not as plentiful as Canon, but Sigma and Tammy options.

For Sony, A77ii is quite a value--I picked mine up refurbished for $729 shipped. 11 FPS, nice 24MP sensor but not great past ISO 3200 like the 7D2 without the help of solid PP software. EVF is a deal killer for some, a coup for others. The Sony glass is overpriced, but the Minolta glass is an outstanding value by with colors that rival Canon. My 200 2.8 Minolta prime is every bit the lens my EF200 2.8 was. The 300 2.8 HS prime goes for about $1700 on eBay, for example, but of course it is difficult to get it serviced if something goes wrong as it is an old lens. Sigma and Tammy options here as well. For video, it is also outstanding although I don't know how it stacks up to the 7D2 in this regard. For $500 more, I would hope it is at least equal. As far as FF options go, there are a lot of happy A99 owners out there but the A7 lineup is tough to beat for landscape potential starting in the $800 range. A used A7 (with extras) went for $675 here like two weeks ago.

Sony A7RIII, Tamron 28mm 2.8 Di III OSD M1:2, Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA, Canon 200mm 2.8L ii, Sigma MC-11, HVL-F43M

You can either get the 5d3 or 7d2 now or save for the 1dxi,1dxii or 5d4/x. The D810, D500, D5 and & d3s/d4/D4s are also options. I personally don't think the D750 is in league of the other cameras for wildlife because of buffer and lack of 1/5000-1/8000 and it's controls. It's a very nice camera otherwise.
