Hello fellow shooters. I am seriously considering this lens but am still on the fence. I want to purchase a tele lense before April 1st when the prices in Canada go up on the account of our poor $.

Does anyone get bothered by the focus breathing issue. I know how severe it is because I used to own this in Nikon. At MFD, the framing was no way near the 300 f4 I used on a second body. D810 helped me crop to my heart's desire though. However it was frustrating at times.

I am using a 1Dx now. I have gone through lots of pages on this thread and couldn't see anyone complaining about the focus breathing issue. It is quite possible I missed it on the pages I didn't read. I have been renting L primes 300 and above for birding and my kids sports games and keep thinking about the flexibility I had with the zoom range of the Sigma. Price is a favtor in my consideration. 300mm 2.8 IS I is slightly cheaper than new Sigma. I am uncertain what to do.

Any thoughts, suggestions, pointers would be appreciated.

Really tough decision, i do have that Canon 300 f2.8 IS mk1 and i keep thinking about getting that Sigma, but to do this then i must sacrifice my beloved 300 first, and i really don't want to, i do shoot sports and i know what you are talking about.

The conclusion here is: i have budget i will buy them all, but i don't have the budget and i must choose either A which is perfect or B which is so great, and both have something i like.

If i were in your situation then i will think about Sigma option if i don't have both, The only thing about Canon is that it is sharper and faster, so do you only want sharper and faster? and about sharpness i think it shouldn't be the whole story, that Sigma isn't soft at all and you can add sharpness and still amazing results, so it will come down only that Canon is faster because it is a prime and from Canon, but put that Sigma into use and you will see what you can get over Canon, i am sure if i will have that Sigma lens then i will have more images and more keepers than the Canon 300, but i can'r decide for you which lens is best for you, you go figure it out by yourself.

Also, price wise, you are comparing a former generation used Canon, to the new up to date generation SIGMA.

If you look at used SIGMA, either the current Gen "Sport" or the previous Gen IS version, your "even playing field" for price becomes much less even! :)

Thank you for your response. The used pricing for the S version here in Canada are actually anywhere from $3500 - $4000 because the retail is $4599 and I was quoted $35XX by a local dealer for a brand new one. Hence the price comparison.

Still getting to grips with the weight of this lens and had to resort to a monopod for the first time whilst at the track.

And a couple for the reason I got the lens and which it excels at, I updated the focus on the dock and it is so fast now.
