This is one of two old freighters, either the James S. Hill or the William Edenborn of the U.S. Steel fleet. They were both sunk offshore in Cleveland in 1962 to protect beach erosion. The ships were coal powered; about 500 feet long and built around 1900. I actually shot this photo in the mid 1970's with my old Mamiya c220 Medium format film camera and then scanned the negative last year.

Here's the Buffalo coming up the Cuyahoga River, Cleveland near the new Innerbelt Bridge construction.

Thanks for looking Mike - I know what you mean.

It was actually pretty scary when I shot this picture on a very cold, windy winter day about 40 years ago. I wasn't in any danger but just seeing the surf crashing like that as the wind whipped around made me feel pretty small near that rusted old hull.

That's a good question Phil - I don't honestly know. I believe there is a site called Shipnerds or something like that which has a huge number of photos as well as a lot of background info on various ships. One of these days I may do some digging around up there about the Buffalo.

The Cornelia held at anchor in Duluth, MN for illegal dumping somewhere on the Great Lakes other than Lake Superior (November 15, 2015).

Vessel CORNELIA is a bulk carrier built in 2001 and currently sailing under the flag of Liberia. CORNELIA has 176m length overall and beam of 23m. Her gross tonnage is 16,807 tons.

Here is the bulk carrier Calumet back in 2007 on the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland. Most likely it had recently off loaded some gravel or sand. Unfortunately just a few years ago it collided with a breakwall that ended up splitting its hull. Because of the age and damage to the craft they decided to break it up for scrap; a sad ending.
