okay, hope this isn't OT or disallowed.

Did you guys see that video, grainy and dark as it was, of the white house fence jumper kicking and punching the Belgain Malinois?

First, I hope he took some serious bites on his body. It made me sick to see the dog hit.

And I'm not looking to get into a political discussion.

But as tough as these dogs are, or as tough as I thought they were, how the heck did he do that? It appeared the dog was on a leash.

Glad they charged him with assault. Whether he's got mental problems or not.

Sorry, haven't seen the video. But being punched has nothing to do with being tough, staying in the fight does. My boy has been punched and kicked on a couple occasions, it just makes him bite and fight harder. I would imagine that the Secret Service would have Mals that are going to stay in the fight. That said, a dog is like a person, someone can do totally awesome in training and then freeze up when it's for real. I've seen it with both dogs and people. On the flip side, some dogs are kind of crappy in training and make outstanding street dogs.

Remarkable animals and equally exceptional photos..... how do your fellow "officers" respond to the presence of other dogs when encountering them, eg., while on foot patrol, in the course of train station patrol in the presence of other service dogs, or perhaps in the course of CISD should the Debriefer be accompanied by a service dog?

Hi Anthony, the short answer is it'll be very dog specific. Some are quite aggressive towards other animals (or people), and some are very friendly. My partner honestly couldn't care less about other dogs. He's in fact been attacked by dogs while biting a suspect and acted as if they weren't even there, he remained so focused on the suspect. At the dog park he plays just fine with other dogs. As a general rule, we don't let working dogs associate with other working dogs. Most of them are intact males, and that's just asking for trouble. As a matter of fact, although my boy is friendly towards dogs, some other males get aggressive towards him, even when their owners say, "My dog loves everyone". Haha. I've noticed there's something about an intact male that can make normally friendly, neutered males act aggressively.

Thank you, Sir, for your very helpful reply, from which I gather that the prudent and respectful approach will be for me to ask our department's K-9 officers for their advice on how to proceed. FWIW, my dog, Emma, a multiple-tour, Therapy dog, with several years of experience in working with folks traumatized and/or dying from sundry conditions, has in fact been bitten by other dogs about whom their owner's have said "Oh, my dog loves everybody." I've come to assess the likelihood of that happening based upon the "vibe" I get from the owner even at a distance so as to take another route and avoid contact with them.
