Anyone using the 7D II, 2X III extender, and 400/5.6 Prime? Mainly trying to figure out if this combo will autofocus at F8?

Mar 22, 2016 19:03 | #4 400mm f/5.6 with a 2xIII gets you 800mm f/11. Nobody autofocusing with that. 6dII/1dIII|Bronica Sq-Ai/EOS 3/A1

Mar 22, 2016 19:20 | #5 I wouldn't worry about the lack of AF too much as it should AF in Live View, however I suspect that you may not wish to keep the images - they won't be great. Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

Thanks for the response. I've been hunting since I was around 7 years old, and am pretty good at being invisible. I just can't figure out how to get closer to skittish waterfowl out on lakes. An 800mm may be something I look at a few years down the road. Zach--C&C is welcome on my photos

This past weekend it was easier to use it to lock onto nearby landmarks then manual focus on my target. 1/2 way through the air show I pulled the 1/4 and let the AF run the whole time. Had a few keepers and never had to sit in any of the airshow traffic. This was from multiple miles away (5-11) with the TC, AF , Recompose. ![]() How long a lens are you using now? Over water during the day, mirage is going to be an issue, getting beyond 400 it's a lot more prevalent than I ever noticed with my 300 2.8 (which took hit days and warm surfaces), and mirage will make things soft. Makes the morning and evening hours all the more important, but over water has now become a source of concern for it, so something to keep in mind. 2 threads you may want to check out about getting closer, being on the water is a lot less threatening to the wildlife apparently https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=17766022 https://photography-on-the.net …read.php?t=1091924&page=1 Website

I used to do a bit of Deer-stalking myself - but cameras have FAR shorter effective range. It just makes it more challenging and more enjoyable. Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

As lilkngster alluded to in post #4, it is impossible for that combo to autofocus at f8 because there is no such thing as f8 with that combination. The largest possible aperture with that combo is f11. "Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.

Trying to get close to them is very seldom, if ever, going to be effective - especially if they are game species like ducks & geese that get hunted. Rather, you wait in a blind and allow them to come close to you. "Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.

If you are lucky, there are *some* locations where you can get close enough to the waterfowl by going to them; but, for a lot of them and in the much more rural areas, Tom's got the right of it. Some patience and and a good book or something to bide your time will do much more for your success, even with a longer lens in the mix. Here, near the coast, we have a lot of areas where we can get "at" the ducks and other water birds without them being "too" skittish; but even a few of those are tricky without spending some time sitting (grebes, in particular). - Eric S.: My Birds/Wildlife
