I am wondering what is the catch here.

No more updates, which havent happened in a while and eventually no more support...

They have had quite a few updates. 14 in the last 3 years.

if you count fixing bugs and recognizing new software.

The last major addition was Analog Efex Pro 2 back in May 2014. I think going free means nothing major is coming, ever.

Edit:

My experience with nik is a few years ago when I trialed with Aperture on my mac, well before google bought it. Was not worth the price at the time, but now thats its free, I'm in (can't wait to play with Silver Efex). I just do not expect to see any more updates, especially after looking at the frequency of the updates.

Silver Efex alone was worth $100+ to me.

I though that when Google first took it over, if you had one of their packages, the let you download al of them for free.

I didn't have anything prior. As I recall it was just a give away announcement like this one.
I didn't pay any attention to it after that and didn't realize they had it for sale after the freebie offer. That's very strange. I would think that would make a lot of people upset when they found out.

Thank you for the link. Lots of updates and changes. Now I have to figure out how to save and import my existing recipes.

I stand corrected.
After further review, I see that I had an edition that came with a Wacom Tablet.
That must be where the free update came from. Sorry for the misinformation.

i've tried using silver efex, and 5/6 times it's shut down photoshop and forced it to close...maybe that's why it was free :)

I have no doubts about that, does seem like it's been a problem for others in the past, so hopefully i can find a solution

Yes you can use it stand alone. Here are some directions for Windows. http://edknepleyphoto.com …on-in-a-stand-alone-mode/ (external link)
I use them as drag n drop tiff processors on Mac with no host.

How do I really it going? I downloaded it, opened the DMG file, went thorugh the installation process, choosing to add it to Lightroom 5, but I open LR and I don't see anything. What do I do?
