I wonder how long it takes, for the eaten creatures, to die in the stomachs of these birds? -?

The birds usually pummel their catch for quite a while, which must kill it. So at least according to my observation, the dying happens outside the stomach.

Nevertheless, those herons and hawks and owls that we love do mete out considerable cruelty to the critters they catch. It's sometimes upsetting to see, but it's nature's way.

This small fish jumped out of the water, and landed on a lily pad.....bad move. The heron was there in an instant.
