Woke up a little earlier than usual to catch a simple glimpse of the special event with my new kit. Partial solar eclipse at its supposed peak, 0823 hours, 9 March 2016 from Singapore. 90% of the sun covered by the moon, supposedly. Canon 5D3, 1000mm, f/32, ND gels in gelatin filter.

The Dartford Warbler is a very rare bird to see here in the UK. They are not a migrating bird and due to several years of very harsh winters it was believed that in the 60's this bird was extinct. The numbers are still currently low all over the UK, but history shows that the species can rebuild. There has been a four year mapping programme involving 40,000 volunteers nationwide. Seven breeding pairs and 22 males have been recorded in the past year on the East Devon Pebblebed Heaths. There are estimates that there are now around 2000. For the past 3 months I have been watching 3 close to my home in Somerset. They nest close to the ground and my concerns recently have been that I have seen lots of stoats in their location. I do hope that they will increase in numbers they are beautiful shy birds. Having a grey back and rusty colour breast with a distinguished red ring around the eyes.
