Hey all, some realy awesome bird shots here, love it. dont have this lens yet but sure gonna get it soon, gonna replace it with my 300 f4L IS, since im not too happy with the IQ with the 300+1,4 combo and i mostly use it for birding and the AF+iq is not where i want it. But i wounder if anyone have any experience with the 400+ a 1,4 tc, if the image quality is "doable" in good light ofc :)

Norway.

Hi Gunvar. I own both the 300 and 400 and they are wonderful lenses. I feel the 300 takes a 1.4 really well and can get pretty decent shots with a x2 teleconverter. I'm pretty new to the 400 but can't seem to get anything decent with the 1.4. So in my experience it doesn't take the 1.4 well. I only have a very old version 1 1.4 but still it works great on my 300. I'm sure others have different experiences. I love my 400 but have been quite disappointed in this aspect of it.

Hi, and thanks for the quick reply and good info. Yeah might just skip the use of 1,4 with that one, i got it on my 300 probably 95% of the time out in the field, so i figured out it might be a good idea to just go for the 400 instead ,tho the 300 is a realy fun and versatile lens with the close focus distance and all, but for pure birding i feel it just gets a bit to short on the shy shore birds and a bit to slow with the 1,4 for the realy quick birds/predators etc.

If you already have the 1.4 II TC give it a try with your 400L. With a little practice I have been able to achieve some good results, and the combo can produce very sharp images. I might have posted this before for a similar conversation, but it's a good example:
