I will post an update.
I have owned my trio
24L II 50L and 100L for over 2 years as a set.

My G7X was sold last year after little use.
My 16-35 f4 is collecting dust as well.
I'm purely a prime guy.

I think this addiction should end with the 100L IS.

Current kit consists of 35L, 50L, 85Lv2, 100L IS and 200Lv2.

24-70 f/2.8L II
70-200 f/2.8L IS II
100 f/2.8L IS
50 1.4

Geez...these all sound familiar...

As the fifth, I've been giving serious thought lately to the 16-35 f/4L IS for landscapes and indoor stuff. Once in a while I think about something longer than 200, but I don't feel like I'd use it enough to validate keeping it around.

Samyang 14mm
24-70 2.8 II
50mm STM
Tamron 90mm VC
135 f2

Aside from the 24-70 it's a really inexpensive and compact portrait and event setup.

Sigma 18-35A
Sigma 50-150 OS HSM f/2.8.
Sigma 150-600 S
Throw in a 10-18 STM for the odd occasions I need something really wide. Oh and wouldn't mind 1.4× and 2.0× teleconverters. Just wish Sigma hadn't fixed the firmware so that with the second and third choices you could actually use the same converters with both lenses. As it is now you need the old ones for the 50-150 and the new ones for the 150-600.

Sigma 50-100A wouldn't be too bad, instead of the now discontinued 50-150, but would have liked it to have OS and be compatible with the new teleconverters.

Now working with:

16-35mm f/4L IS
24-70 f/2.8L II
70-200 f/2.8L IS II
85mm f/1.8
135mm f/2L

I think I may ditch the 85 and replace with a 35mm f/1.4L at some point.

Dan, I like this thread, thanks for starting it all those years ago!

Here's my last post, back in May 2015:

MatthewK wrote in post #17560393 (external link)
I'm still at:

16-35 f/4
24L II
50L
100L
70-200 f/2.8L II

Im heavily debating on selling the 16-35 or 24L, but can't decide which to let go of because they both serve a very different purpose.

On the other end of the range I'm leaning towards adding the 100-400II to the mix as well, afterwhich I'd need to start a "Your Realistic 3-6 lens Collection" thread .

A lot has changed since then, and I'm at 6 lenses now, but one of them would go if I needed to liquidate, so does that count? :) Here's my realistic, shoot everything I love, 3-5 lens collection:

16-35 f/2.8 III
50L
100L
70-200 f/2.8L II
100-400 II

This setup does everything you could want (events, macro, wild life, low light, portraits), with a tilt towards the tele end of things. I got rid of my 24L and 16-35 f/4 because I don't like wide angle stuff all that much, and having just one lens in that range made sense.

As I said above, I have currently have 6 lenses, as I have the 135L. It's my "nice to have fun lens". Like the 100L, it's an amazing lens for the money, so it's hard not to keep it around, but if things in my life go south it's the first one on the chopping block.

Other than that, I'm fiending for the 400 DO II, but I'm probably 80% sure I won't get it :)

I'm pretty happy with my kit. Although, I am thinking about adding a 24LII for a bit more drama in landscapes or other images. I did trade my 200/2.8 for a 70-200/2.8 recently and am quite happy with my first zoom in 15 years.

Thanks for the thread, Dan!

My top three are my most used lenses on my 5DM3:

Canon 24-105 f/4L IS
Canon 70-200 f/4L IS
Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS (Mk I)

Yes I have other lenses, and I use them. These are the ones I want were I limited to 3-5. The 24-105 I use probably 75% of the time. It might be nice to have the 70-200 in f/2.8, but I've seldom really needed the extra f-stop. On the 100-400, I actually love the push/pull zoom. If I'm shooting soccer, I'm right with the players as they move from one end of the field to the other.

The last two I'd add are these:

Canon 85 f/1.8
Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG II

The Canon is very nice, and while not as fast as the L lens, it is very quick to focus. I also like the photos I make with it. The Sigma was the only one in its class for Canon when I got it. Now Canon has the 11-24 and Sigma has a new Art version. No matter, I love my Mk II Sigma.

In closing, I know I could have upped the lenses a bit in quality, but these work very well, and I can make good photos with them. I've never felt as if they represented a bad compromise.

Zeiss Classic 35mm f1.4
Zeiss Classic 135mm f2
Zeiss Classic 50mm f1.4
Zeiss Classic 25mm f2
Canon 8-15mm Fisheye

I'd probably end up using the 25mm most of the time and the 35mm when it got dark. 50mm would be good for portraits. The fisheye, 35mm, and 135mm would be for skate photos. I'd be a happy guy. I am extremely temped to exchange the 135mm for the 24-70mm f2.8 II; luckily I'm a college student so I don't have to make that decision
