I'm still struggling a bit with this lens... My keeper rate is lower than expected and most images are just a bit soft. I updated the firmware, which seemed to help. This was shot in raw. I probably should have adjusted and shot at f/8. I have 12 days to get the hang of this lens - any suggestions?

Looking at the larger image on flickr, I'd say sharpness is quite good, but your focus is on the rear end of the animal. At 600mm and f/6.3 you have a very shallow DOF to work with, so you've got to hit focus where you want it to be. In this case I'm sure you intended it to be the head. Actually, given the likely distance between the rear end and the animals head, I'm surprised the head is as clear as it is.

I was about 75 yards out, using the car door as a bench rest, Back button focus with a single point on the eye. The weather has been so bad that I have not had a chance to give this lens a fair evaluation, but looking at what I have taken so far I have a sense that it may be back focusing a bit. But, then again it still could be user error...

Didn't mean to imply user error or poor form, Mag, it probably is back focusing. I do think it's sharp where it hit focus, though.

after a year with this lens i wouldn't advise f6.3 for distance shots ,minimum of f8 ,and as has been said keep the focus point on the eye ..the weight and the front heavy balance need time to get used to ,not sure if you use a battery pack but it would help ,with the balance

Busy background, but this guy wasn't gonna perch anywhere with a clear shot and clean background. This is the best I came away with after a long afternoon spent trying.
