you need more DoF
girl in the back is OOF
F4 at least, prob 5.6 required at that distance

I like the 3D feel coming from the limited depth of field.

you can't fix in focus - you can always add blur

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

The gorgeous Daria Dali striking a pose with Foxbait Couture at the Pacific Design Center during Style LA Fashion Week... Daria's dreamy green eyes, fun personality, and runway presence is a great combination with the couture brand she is wearing... A model I hope to collaborate with in the very near future!!! 1DX + 200 1.8L... ISO 400, f/1.8 @ 1/400sec... House spot lights for illumination...

;)

Why add fake, non-progressive, blur that doesn't fool the eye if you can have the genuine thing by limiting DOF? If feel of depth is what you are after at all, of course.

Next time, if you have 3 rows of people, and you are that close to them, then think about F5.6 as a starting point and then move things around from there depending on the available light

- you shot with a 5D3 at | 1/80 | f/2.2 | ISO 400

- here are some other choices for 'similar' exposure:
1/100, F4, ISO 1600
1/125, F4, ISO 2000
1/160, F4, ISO 2500

or
1/100, F4.5, ISO 2000
1/125, F4.5, ISO 2500
1/100, F5, ISO 2500
1/125, F5, ISO 2500
1/160, F5, ISO 3200

or
1/80, F5.6, ISO 2500

For that long FL handheld with a 5D3 and 3 rows of people, I like the sweet spot of 1/125, F4.5, ISO 2500
- the 1/125 vs 1/80th you used would help alot with blurr
- F4.5 for sure would have had the young lady in the first row tack sharp (assuming similar focus point on the 2nd row girl), and the combo of higher SS and F4.5 vs F2.2 would have made a substantial improvement in sharpness for the young lady in the 3rd row
- ISO 2500 is sort of the last decent ISO in the 5D3 before colours really deteriorate

I thought this was a thread for prime lens portraits? Isn't there a dedicated thread for people soliciting CC?

If you cropped these both you'd have your basic police mug shot.

I think you're too far from the subject in both. The house in the background in picture two is distracting. Lighting looks ok....maybe work on posing. He looks very nervous and stiff in both and the straight on camera position isn't flattering to anyone.

I'd suggest if this is a fist attempt at portraiture to concentrate on just that. You say this is also the first time you've used a fully manual lens so now you have to concentrate on all of the things that go into making a good portrait and filly farting around with making this lens do what you want. You're creating handicaps where you really don't need to.

Look at some posing ideas here and online and keep experimenting.

thanks for the feedback! I agree on all points. Lots to learn and I definitely tried to bite off more than I could handle.

When I go out again, I will use my 50mm instead so I can focus on composition and try and give my model a bit of direction.

If it was perfect right off the bat, it'd take the fun out of learning! :p

Thank you for your invaluable advice. Although I love to shoot using these fast primes, they always result in too shallow DOF.
