Came home from work to find my resident red fox napping in the backyard. Grabbed the camera and slipped into my backyard just inside the gate to observe from a distance. A fellow shutterbug joined me, and eventually my wife and daughter did as well. Most of the time was spent observing him napping with the occasional yawn, stretch, and watchful gaze. Things got interesting when he finished off the remains of a meal in the yard, and then really interesting when he came over to within 10ft to check us out. The fox retreated after a few sniffs, and watched us very intently from my deck. Although he often just jumps the fences, we concluded it wanted out of the yard via the open gate we were next to. We backed off to make room and he then trotted right on down the walkway and past us.

How cool! It must be great to have that little guy around. If you leave treats out he will visit often. :)

I have to drive 2 hrs to get reliable shots of foxes.

lol ...You have no idea what a treasure you have lol,.. I'm sure you will be the next Fox King of PTON..... What a beauty It looks like a last year's kit to me. They are very much like dog's and will respond in kind if you share some time and space with that cool dude. I have spent dozen's of hours with the fox over the last few years and would kill to have mine in the back yard.

Thanks! I do indeed count myself as very fortunate to have such a beautiful visitor but have no delusions of being the fox king, lol. There are plenty of others way more talented than me in that department. I give him lots of respectful space and glad for the photo ops.

Please don't do this. Getting wildlife habituated to human contact is basically a death sentence. Eventually its going to get bold enough to do something that will compel animal control to kill it.

Not to worry, I have not, nor have any intention of feeding it. It's had no problem finding suitable prey. Besides, why would I want to discourage it from reducing my resident squirrel population.
