Got a fairly boring set of harbor shots however this shot of a Sydney harbor passenger ferry heading towards Sydney Harbor Bridge( partially obscured on RHS) looked a good candidate for some experimental tone mapping to bring out the cloud and ferry etc detail. Normally tone mapping is no good for water as it just makes it look too busy etc however this wasnt too bad . Clipper

They are huge....Around 1.5 meters high when standing on land. The 100-400Mk2 combined with the 5DSR isd a game changer for Birds in Flight photography. The lens extremely light compared to a 500 or 600 f4 and when combined with a Mk3 1.4 extender it gives length with next to no hit on IQ from the extender. Its like the 1.4 Mk3 and the 100-400 Mk2 were designed as one there is that little difference in IQ with or without 1.4 Clipper

Its like the 1.4 Mk3 and the 100-400 Mk2 were designed as one there is that little difference in IQ with or without 1.4 And the bonus is that with the high on target pixels of 5dsr I was able to crop in heavily like a 7dMk2 and get the centre of the image enlarged to as shown below....So using a 1.6 crop factor( which equates to this image as shot with a 7dmk2) means that I was using the equivalent focal length of a 600+mm lens at f5.6. (As I was using no extender for this shot I didnt lose any aperture stops)... It was perfect in another way also because these Brolgas dont hang around for long as they get rattled easily so by the time I spotted it at a distance I had no time to put on my extender or change camera SS settings and just shot hoping I had enough crop to get close to the bird in PP....And not only did I have the data to crop right in but it was Hi res enough still to even capture the water drops dropping from the birds beak and feet as it went flying past . And this was all done at 1/600th second which is a no no for an effective shutter speed to capture a flying bird. Should have been using at least 1/1600 sec min. And I certainly would never have been able to get this shot appearing like this if I had a FF sensor with the lower pixel count like the 1dx'x and 5dMk 2/3's etc and certainly wouldnt have got it trying to handhold a big lens like a 600mm .. I would need to go back to the gym to practise with weights to be able to do that successfully ![]() Hosted photo: posted by clipper_from_oz in ./showthread.php?p=17966736&i=i238360304 forum: Canon EOS Digital Cameras Just the way I see it too .I may get the 1dxmkII but Im sure it will lag in Mps for birding . Rob I'm going on a somewhat similar path. I'm going with the 5DsR and 1D X Mark II. These two camera bodies should cover the bases well.
