Is the Sony STF very good for portraits? Although I love its bokeh, and that's why I want it - I've read multiple complaints that it looks overdone and fake / highly PPed.

What are you thoughts, would clients be turned off by this lens' bokeh - would I be better off with 70-200L II 2.8?

... why was my thread moved to canon? The STF is a sony lens.

There is the Canon 135mm/2.8 softfocus. And STF was probably took for softfocus?

While I like my lenses with apodization filter, I have to agree that sometimes the images look artifical. But somtimes I hate the normal bokeh normal lenses give. So it depends on the image :-/

I borrowed this lens twice. It is like a gem with unparalleled sharpness and dream bokeh. The problem to me is..to overcome focusing problem. I shoot kids portrait most of the time and I need a fast focusing lens which can lock on focus quick and sharp like 135L. The Zeiss f1.8 is amazingly sharp as well. I ended up returning STF. Another lens is 100f2.8 variosoft.

Are you talking about the sony lens? Your sig doesn't show any sony bodies.

I have both the Sony 135/2.8 STF and the Sony 135/1.8 ZA. The 135/2.8 STF does NOT look faked or overdone, just very smooth and pleasing bokeh appropriate to an f/2.8 aperture.

But my favorite lens for close-up portraits is the Sony 135/1.8 ZA. The super-wide aperture provides a very fast transition to a very pleasing and total blur. There’s just no substitute for an f/1.8 aperture.

Yes of cause. 100 f2.8 variosoft, 135 f2.8(4), and 138f1.8ZA are lenses unique to a mount.
