... and the results were better than I had expected. In-flight was definitely slower, but do-able. Wondering if a 1.4x III would improve both speed and IQ? Also wondering if a Tamron or Sigma 150-600mm would yield better results. Hmm!

i didn't know the 7DII AF would work at f/8... anyway, these came out very nice. can't say they're quite as good as what i get with my 7DII and Tamron 150-600, but for shots with a converter, they're definitely very nice.

Yip, believe AF but with centre point only at f/8 on 7D mk 2

Very nice Linh.

I don't think you will gain much speed with the MIII TC but the shots should be sharper.

I feel my 7D2+100-400MII + 1.4 MIII is sharper than my Tamron 150-600.

Mark, actually I have center point, plus 4 surrounds at f/8.

Thanks, John. I have a Canon 2x III that I barely, barely used after selling my 300mm f/2.8 IS. Maybe I should sell both the 2x III and the 1.4x II and get a 1.4x III instead.

Great captures!!! I like the performance of my 150-600 but I also have a friend that just bought the new 100-400 and I actually like the performance way better ... I feel they both have there specific place.
